When you choose a career, there are many considerations that you should bear in mind. One of the most important, probably second only to “Do I find this career interesting?”, is the question of financial compensation. After all, if you’re going make a long-term commitment to a particular vocation, then you need to make sure that the monetary compensation is enough to support yourself (and perhaps a family?) comfortably. You need to make long-range plans.

With that in mind, we’re about to take a look at the financial prospects of one career, namely Agile Scrum Masters. We’ll also touch upon some peripheral aspects of Agile Scrum as well, to provide a complete picture. If there are other careers you want to get this spotlight treatment, then give us some feedback!

But for now, on with Agile Scrum Masters.

What Is an Agile Scrum Master?

An Agile Scrum Master is a professional who is responsible for Scrum promotion and support. The Scrum Master helps everyone in the organization understand Agile Scrum’s practices, rules, theories, and values. The Scrum Master both leads and serves the Scrum Team, and helps non-team members see which interactions with the Scrum Team are useful, and which are not.

Agile Scrum’s creators define it as “a framework within which people can address complex adaptive problems, while productively and creatively delivering products of the highest possible value. Scrum itself is a simple framework for effective team collaboration on complex products.” Scrum is a particular methodology followed in the course of practicing Agile software development. Look at Scrum as a subset of Agile, a smaller component within a broader framework.

How Do You Become a Scrum Master?

There are three steps involved in becoming a Certified Scrum Master (CSM).

  • Become familiar with Scrum itself, particularly its lifecycle and framework.
  • Take the two-day Certified Scrum Trainer-led CSM course. You must attend in person.
  • Pass the CSM certification exam by correctly answering at least 37 of the 50 questions.

If you already have a robust set of technical skills, you’re already poised to make the jump to an Agile Scrum Master. That’s because knowledge of software development is a crucial element to being a good Scrum Master. So, if you have excellent communication skills and a background in software design, testing, or development, then you’ve got a good start.

There are many online resources available for the ambitious, career-minded individual to learn everything need to know about Scrum. Alright, so we’ve covered how to take care of the first bullet item on the above list. For the other two, see the end of the article.

Never forget that a Scrum Master is a team leader, sort of like the captain of a sports team. It’s no coincidence that the word “scrum” is taken from the sport of rugby. That’s why a Scrum Leader needs to have solid motivational and communication skills.

If you’re intrigued enough to want more in-depth information on becoming a Scrum Master, check out this article. Even if you’re not interested in becoming a Scrum Master anytime soon, you should consider upskilling, as this adds to your value and marketability. After all, you may eventually move on to a different company. It never hurts to improve your chances of getting hired! Upskilling is a smart idea. Get it done sooner rather than later, and you’ll be ready to seize a new work opportunity as soon as it presents itself.

What’s Scrum Master Demand Like Today?

In addition to considering whether you’d like the career you’ve chosen and the compensation it offers, it’s also wise to wonder what future demand will be like. It would be unfortunate if you got yourself all set on a career path, only to find that the market has shrunk.

According to the 2019 Scrum Master Trends Report, Scrum usage is on the rise. Additionally, 81% of Scrum users supplement it with other Agile practices such as DevOps, Kanban, and XP.

The demand for Scrum Masters rises proportionately to the popularity of the methodology. Since an increasing number of industries and organizations are adopting Scrum, it follows that more Scrum Masters are needed.

In terms of what industries are using Scrum teams, for starters, there’s the most obvious one, Software Development. Software demand continues to rise and with it, the need to manage design projects as efficiently and effectively as possible, something that Scrum was tailor-made for.

But it’s not just software design that’s climbed onto the Scrum bandwagon. The world of finance has been taking advantage of Scrum teams for a while now, especially in the context of releasing new consumer services. Government offices are using Scrum teams to help cut waste and prevent projects from getting mired in useless deadlines or milestones.

Marketing, with its focus on projects, campaigns, and teams, is an ideal candidate for the Scrum treatment. This shouldn’t come as any surprise, mainly when you take into account how much of today’s marketing happens online. Digital marketing brings an overlap with the world of IT, specifically apps, websites, and software.

The manufacturing sector uses Scrum teams to help create better products, identifying problems before they turn up as defects in finished products. Instead of a typical Scrum project involving the design of a new app, think instead of a Scrum team designing a new automobile, smartphone, or athletic shoe.

Bottom line, any industry that creates a product or service can benefit from an Agile Scrum team, and of course, a Scrum Master to lead it!
