How to Become a Certified ScrumMaster

Anyone can become a Certified ScrumMaster, irrespective of their background or industry, provided they receive proper training in recognized institutions.

Who is a ScrumMaster?

Before looking at what is expected of a Scrum Master, one should first understand the concept of the Scrum framework. Scrum is a lightweight agile management framework primarily used for software development tasks, including developing complete software packages or some components of larger systems. It describes an iterative and incremental approach for project work that allows it to remain flexible enough to change in a controlled manner without extra expenses and risks of destroying large sections of previous work.

The scrum framework implements the cornerstones defined by the agile methodology, namely: individuals and interactions over tools and processes; customer collaboration over contract negotiation; working software over comprehensive documentation; and response to change over following a plan. It is a highly successful framework with multiple benefits, such as increased productivity, better product quality, higher customer satisfaction, reduced or stable project costs, and increased employee motivation and satisfaction.

A Scrum Master is one of the three components of a scrum framework. The other two are the scrum product owner and the scrum team. Scrum teams are characterized by the lack of a project manager. They operate based on self-organization and communication within the team, where the Scrum Master and scrum product owner share responsibilities. The Scrum Master is actually a part of the scrum team and is required to assume the roles of both servant and leader for the team.

The ScrumMaster is supposed to manage how the team communicates by asking questions such as what did you accomplish yesterday? What did you accomplish today? and what were the impediments, if any? The Scrum Master protects the team from external distractions and helps to keep them focused, eliminates obstacles that may hinder the team’s progress, and helps the team to reach consensus in a timely manner. This makes the whole scrum team responsible for all outcomes.
