Student Spotlight: How Self-investment Led to the Ultimate Career Transition

Working in the IT service management domain for 10 years, Vikas Pandey knew he had unfulfilled potential. With no direct reports under him, Vikas worked closely with his company’s pre-sales team converting bids into projects, understanding the client requirements, and preparing pre-sales presentations. What he wasn’t able to do was drive projects from start to finish—a goal he hoped to attain, but he lacked the technical and management skills required to lead teams.

A commerce graduate from Mumbai, India, Vikas had invested almost five years into Atos, a European IT services company that specializes in hi-tech transactional services, unified communications, cloud, big data and cybersecurity services.

Vikas knew that if he wanted to make a change in his career path, he would need to invest in himself. He began looking for a course that offered in-depth knowledge about IT service management along with practical experience in implementing the methodologies and frameworks in real-life scenarios. He enrolled in Simplilearn’s ITIL Lifecycle Expert Training after evaluating the course material, schedule options, and course advisors.

Achieving Distant Goals

Simplilearn’s ITIL Lifecycle Expert Training program proved to be a turning point in Vikas’s life. He spent over an hour each day during the week and nearly three hours on weekends taking the training.

“Simplilearn had the most convenient class schedules. It provided online learning without forcing you to compromise on your professional and personal time. I was able to plan my class timings at my own pace,” he says.

Simplilearn also offered the advantage of being able to revisit the lectures repeatedly so that Vikas could spend additional time on the concepts he found most complicated until he felt confident applying them in real-life scenarios.

Simplilearn’s training equipped Vikas with the critical skills he needed for his job. The classes on service operations and continuous service improvement helped him understand the methodologies and skills needed to run a project smoothly. Today, he is able to review and make recommendations for improvement in a project lifecycle. He is also able to map out his learnings to enhance the cost-effectiveness and quality of service delivery for his company.

Effective communication and stakeholder management is a crucial part of Simplilearn’s ITIL Lifecycle Expert training and includes everything from stakeholder management strategy and analysis to stakeholder engagement assessment matrix. The case studies included with the course allowed Vikas to visualize these concepts before putting them into practice successfully.

Result: A Dream Job!

Before completing the ITIL course, Vikas was working in a 100,000+ employee company without any direct reports of his own. Now, as a senior project manager, Vikas handles a team of more than 70 people and the team is soon going to expand to 100. He has strengthened his confidence both at a personal as well as professional level and is able to bring a more cohesive approach to his work.

Vikas Pandey’s decision to invest time in himself proved to be worth both his time and money. He was able to carve a new path in his career by identifying his weaknesses and expanding his skill set on his own accord.  Do you feel like all that’s stopping you from a career move is a lack of certain skills?
