From a Programmer to Scrum Master - My Story of Learning and Success
I always wanted to work in the software industry from my childhood. In the early 90s, IT was much in demand, and I entered the industry without a well thought-out career plan.
After completing my diploma in computer science, I got my first job in 1998. I had to create screensaver applications in Visual Basic and loved it so much that I decided to make software my career.
After two years of work experience as a programmer, it became clear to me that while my programming skills were very good, I needed to learn better project management skills if I wanted to move up the career ladder. So I decided to take ITSM and project management certifications.
That proved to be a turning point in my career, and I received promotions quickly. Of late, however, I have noticed that clients have become more demanding and need solutions quickly. The market place is more crowded than it was and companies need to be able to deliver quality work to stand out. Our traditional way of working was not fulfilling customer expectations in terms of quality, quantity, and delivery.
Moreover, I had become a project manager, and team management and willingness to deliver and contribute became key facets of my job profile.
This is why I decided to take Simplilearn's Agile Scrum Master certification training program. I knew that Agile Scrum methodology increase productivity, but I wanted to know exactly how it would benefit my organization and how to measure the impact of its success.
To get an answer these questions, I decided to take a training course.
I had previously taken the ITIL foundation and PRINCE 2 certification course from Simplilearn and they helped me a great deal; I landed my current job of project manager by up-skilling myself with these certifications.
So I was very comfortable with the teaching process at Simplilearn and was eager to learn more.
The training from Simplilearn met my high expectations. The instructors were fantastic and the practice tests helped me ace the certification exam.
The course answered my two main questions; I learned that Agile Scrum is a process that is adaptable to all types of organizations and has clear metrics to gauge success.
I learned how to apply Scrum to projects that required collaboration from 100s of team members spread across the globe. I also learned how to use cutting-edge tools like Atlassian's JIRA platform. I became proficient in Scrum terminologies and their applications, and I am now ready to facilitate daily scrums, user stories, sprint planning, and sprint reviews.
I am also capable of producing the different Scrum artifacts including the product backlog, sprint backlog, finished deliverables, and definition of done - this has made it possible for my team to get ahead of timelines and move the needle on important projects. I passed the EXIN Agile Scrum Master exam on my first attempt, and now use scrum every day.
The training also helped me internalize one of the main principles of the PRINCE2 course: that successful project management is about maximizing business value by minimizing low-yield risks.
Following the training, I am able to deliver projects on time and per the client expectations; so thank you, Simplilearn!
