Gaining new skills doesn’t have to be one size fits all. With the availability of curriculums that cross a variety of disciplines and flexible formats that accommodate any schedule, upskilling can become a way of life for modern professionals. That’s what student Seema Bhandarkar discovered when she began her journey with Simplilearn.

A senior research scientist with over a decade of experience, Seema earned a master’s degree with a specialization in microbiology in 2004. Having started her career at clinical stage biotech company, Aurigene Discovery, then spending 10 years at Syngene, she found herself back at Aurigene as a program manager when she decided to upskill.

Designing a Unique Upskilling Path

“The upskilling journey for me started when I was working with Syngene in 2018,” Seema said. “I decided to upskill because I felt that I needed an upgrade. I started with the PMP certification and then went on to do multiple other courses.”

While upskilling in project management was in alignment with her role as a senior scientist, Seema realized that all of her current reading was only related to the scientific field. She decided to expand her knowledge base by upskilling in the area of digital marketing using Simplilearn’s Digital Marketing 101 course. Learning the fundamental concepts of digital marketing, along with marketing for mobile and marketing analytics, provided an introduction to a field completely outside of her own. From there, she continued her upskilling journey by completing the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course.

“I thought the course would help me explore other career opportunities and would also increase my knowledge,” Seema said. “Before I knew it by 2020 I had already upskilled in so many domains with Simplilearn.”

Balancing Upskilling with Work and Home

Adding a learning plan into an already busy personal and professional life requires a strategy. For Seema, Simplilearn’s self-paced course model gave her the freedom to choose when and where she completed the courses. While Seema did not work from home for long during the 2020 lockdowns, she used her new work schedule to fit upskilling into her days.

“We quickly switched to the shift system,” Seema said. “Since I had the morning shift I would get time in the afternoon to focus on other things. That’s when I would go through the course material and the videos.”

Even with a full-time job, family, and simultaneously completing an MBA program, Seema credits the flexible learning formats for helping her balance learning with home and work. “While cooking or doing some other household chores, I could run the video on the side and simultaneously go about my day while upskilling,” she said. “The content design was great because all the videos were self-explanatory. They information came across so simply that it actually allowed me to do something else while listening and learning.”

Upskilling for Professional and Personal Growth

For Seema, the rewards of upskilling have been both personal and professional. When she returned to Aurigene with the new certifications and courses under her belt, she was offered a very high salary hike. In addition, Seema used the course work to increase her knowledge and skills where she’d identified areas for improvement.

After completing several programs with Simplilearn, she was able to apply all of her new skills to build confidence and to become a better professional. “There were so many times while doing the course that I would think of giving up because my knowledge in each course was very limited since I come from a science background,” Seema said. “But the courses have helped me see that if I put my mind to something I am able to complete it.”
