The Challenge: Taking On the Role of ScrumMaster
Through hard work and a willingness to learn on the job, Namrata has advanced through the ranks as a professional software engineer and then program manager since graduating in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. She worked with SAP software (and the ABAP programming language specifically) at SoftSpin for a couple of years before moving on to a series of senior-level software engineer and management-level jobs.
Mercedes-Benz R&D India hired Namrata as a Program Manager for the Service Operation team. Her work focused on SAP and financial services, in which she had plenty of experience, but her manager knew she was on the path to more ambitious roles. She asked Namrata whether she wanted to take on the role of ScrumMaster.
ScrumMasters have a lot of responsibility. They coordinate the various activities comprising a given project with business objectives (bringing a new software release to market, for example), ensuring the project is done right and delivered on time. They host meetings and maintain multiple lines of communication to make sure everyone has the information and resources they need—when they need it. It’s similar to the role of a movie director, although it’s typically applied to technology projects that involve large, multidisciplinary teams.
Namrata was heartened by her manager’s confidence but admitted she was a little skeptical about making the transition right away, as she only knew the basics of the Agile methodology. She decided her best option was to pursue formal certification as a ScrumMaster, so she searched the internet for a viable solution. Armed with the latest skills, she performed at a high level as her team’s ScrumMaster and was able to make everyone around her better as well.
Namrata’s next training goal is to complete the Advanced Certified ScrumMaster® (A-CSM) Certification Training (also a two-day course). While certified ScrumMasters are in high-demand and thus well-compensated, the A-CSM certification further enhances her profile by providing employers and recruiters with the proof that she has the experience and leadership credentials to handle their most important projects.
