Using Big Data to Achieve New Career Goals : Course Review

Expanding your skill set to advance your career is easier and more affordable than ever. It requires a goal, a dose of initiative, and enrolling in a Simplilearn certification course.

Pharmacist Dominic Amon decided to upskill his talents while working full-time as a pharmacy house officer at Maamobi General Hospital in Accra, Ghana. After six years of training at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, he obtained his pharmacist license and worked as a Pharmacy House Officer at Maamobi General Hospital.

“It set me on the path to practice public health, primarily in HIV care and clinical pharmacy,” Amon explained. “It was at this point I developed an interest in health projects and programs. I decided to take an online course to become certified to help boost my skills and make me employable in this sector.”

Amon saw the possibilities of big data in the pharmacy industry, and he wanted to understand the latest technologies available better. He plunged ahead, worked hard, and became certified in Simplilearn’s PRINCE2® Practitioner and Foundation, Introduction to Data Analytics, and Digital Transformation Leader.

“These certifications have helped me offer my creativity on projects,” Amon explained. “The courses taught me how to calculate risks and when to act on them. Since we are also in the era of big data, the data analytics skills I acquired will help me gather data, interpret it, make inferences, and implement solutions. I also intend to work on research projects, so skills I learned from Prince2® and Introduction to Data Analytics will set me on the path to being a good professional in this area.”

Big Data Benefits

Health care data often resides in multiple places and departments across an organization, so big data helps professionals track and leverage the information. According to Forbes, big data can help improve clinical, operational, and financial outcomes for pharmacies in three ways:

  • Deeper Insights

Many health systems use analytics to improve the visibility of medication usage trends. Leveraging the power of big data across multiple sites can help reveal the effectiveness of particular approaches or treatments.

  • Better Forecasting

Big data can drive significant operational improvements, such as using a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution to synchronize a patient’s multiple prescriptions. By streamlining workflows, pharmacists can reduce the time on the phone or dealing with refills. That leaves more time to engage with patients and provide revenue-building value-added services, such as immunizations, medication therapy management, and point-of-care testing.

  • Benchmarking Performance

With big data, a health system can measure its business performance against industry benchmarks. This information can be valuable during drug shortages and strains on the supply chain.

Improving Service to Clients

“While working as a house officer, I managed the ART clinic and diabetic clinic of the hospital,” he said. “At the ART clinic, I was responsible for refills, counseling clients, and initiating new clients on therapy. I also checked for drug interactions as most of the patients had other conditions such as hypertension in addition to diabetes.”

Amon found that his new skills helped him in his everyday work. “The certification helped me implement strategies to help my clients adhere to therapy,” he said. “I saw each client as a project and tackled each one to help them. I had a plan to personally call them to remind them of clinic dates and check up on them. It also helped me to rate the performance and progress of therapy using key performance indicators.”

Looking Ahead to Better Care

Today, Amon uses his skills as a consultant and research pharmacist at Atlon Healthcare pharmaceuticals. “My long-term career goal is to work on research projects where data is acquired and analyzed and is used to make good policies that ensure health equity and make a positive change on global health. I also intend to set up a wellness center to teach people about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. I hope to teach them how to be free from noncommunicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes and be in good mental health.”

He added that the certifications and knowledge acquired from Simplilearn gave him the confidence to apply for international jobs. While he hasn’t been successful yet, he remains confident.

“This course has helped teach me discipline, making good use of time, perseverance, and setting out to achieve set targets,” he said. “Sometimes I do come home tired, but I have to persevere and motivate myself to study. As a result, now I don’t give up easily but keep trying.”

He advises being dynamic, versatile, and innovative as a professional. “Do not be satisfied with current achievements but rather aspire to the best you can be,” Amon said. “Seek every opportunity to grow no matter how little it might seem to be.”
