Quick answer: what is a Data Scientist, and how do you become one in India?
A data scientist collects and cleans data, then builds, tests and explains statistical and machine learning models, experiments and forecasts that turn it into business decisions. Where a data analyst mainly reports on what happened, a data scientist predicts outcomes and tests what drives them. On AmbitionBox, Data Scientists in India report an average salary of about ₹16.1 lakh a year (61.4k reports, 1 to 8 years of experience, updated October 5, 2026), with the middle half of reports between about ₹7.6 lakh and ₹17.6 lakh; other salary platforms measure pay differently and report averages from ₹10.2 lakh to ₹15.0 lakh. The core skills are statistics and experiments, Python and SQL, and machine learning. Most postings ask for experience: in a sample of 100 Naukri postings collected October 6, 2026, 5 accepted 0 years. This page's suggested planning range for the first four roadmap stages is 39 to 62 weeks from zero at about 10 hours of study a week, stage projects included; a B.Tech or B.Sc graduate with college math and some Python could plan on 8 to 12 months to build an entry-level portfolio. These are planning estimates, not measured hiring outcomes.
Simplilearn programs for the foundation stages of the Data Scientist roadmap
None of the three Simplilearn programs mapped to this role is a data science program. All three are AI-powered data analytics programs, and on this roadmap they serve as the analytics foundation: they cover stages 1 and 2 and part of stage 3, and the two partner programs reach into stage 4. Each tile states what the program does not cover. None suits a student straight after Class 10 or 12: two require a bachelor's degree, and the third's entry requirement was not on the page captured. Whichever route you choose, test it against three questions:
- Does it take you past descriptive analysis to experiment design and validated models?
- Does it require projects you build and defend, rather than only exercises?
- Does it teach you to judge whether a result holds up on new data, not only how to produce one?

Which starting point fits your current level
| If you are here now | You can already | Start with | Because it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Work in spreadsheets, but write little or no code | Data Analyst Course; or, if you hold a bachelor's degree, either AI-Powered Data Analytics program (with E & ICT Academy, IIT Kanpur, or with IITM Pravartak) | Roadmap stages 1 and 2 and part of stage 3. The two partner programs add a machine learning module, and the IITM Pravartak program adds deep learning fundamentals |
| Intermediate | Write SQL and Python, clean data and fit a regression | No program on this list is aimed at you | All three start from stage 1. Your next stages are experiments (stage 3) and machine learning in depth (stage 4) |
| Advanced | Run A/B tests and build validated predictive models | No program on this list is aimed at you | All three stop before causal inference, deep learning beyond fundamentals and MLOps |
| Expert | Own the modeling approach and its validation for a business area | No program on this list is aimed at you | At this level the gap is scope, not curriculum: production ownership, a specialization or leading other data scientists |
Proficiency levels are Simplilearn's framework, defined under skill levels, not an industry standard. Each program sits at the level it assumes you have reached, not the level it takes you to; the two AI-Powered Data Analytics programs share an eligibility block and so sit at the same level, told apart by partner and coverage. Partner names, topics and official eligibility are quoted from each program's own page as served in India, captured October 6, 2026. Recommended preparation is this page's guidance, not an admission requirement. Stage coverage is this page's reading of each captured curriculum against the five-stage roadmap.
For programs that go further into machine learning, compare data science courses. For program details, fees and eligibility of analytics certificates, see data analytics courses.
The 5-stage data scientist roadmap at a glance
The first four stages take you to entry-level data scientist skills. This page's suggested planning range for them is 39 to 62 weeks of part-time study from zero, about 9 to 14 months at 10 hours a week, with each stage's project included. The fifth stage, production machine learning and leadership, comes after your first role; with it, all five stages total 49 to 78 weeks of study. Where you start changes the plan: 8 to 12 months for a B.Tech or B.Sc graduate with college math and some Python, 6 to 12 months for a working data analyst or IT professional who already uses SQL, and 12 to 18 months for a commerce, humanities or business professional, an editorial estimate. Students after Class 10 or 12 take a degree first. The stage sum measures the full path from zero; the background ranges count only the stages each starting point still needs. None of these figures includes the job search, and none is a measured hiring outcome.
| Stage | Focus | Suggested planning range |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build math, statistics and code foundations | Probability and statistics, linear algebra and calculus, Python or R basics, SQL querying (L1) | 10-16 weeks |
| 2. Wrangle, explore and visualize data | Data cleaning with pandas, exploratory data analysis, visualization in Power BI, Tableau or matplotlib, metrics (L2) | 6-10 weeks |
| 3. Model statistically and run experiments | Hypothesis testing and A/B testing, regression and classification, causal inference, presenting results (L3) | 8-12 weeks |
| 4. Learn machine learning and validate models | Supervised and unsupervised models in scikit-learn, ensembles, model validation, deep learning, NLP and generative AI models (L4) | 15-24 weeks |
| 5. Production ML and leadership, after your first role | Models in production, cloud and distributed data (AWS, Azure or GCP, Spark), scalable data products, mentoring (L5) | 10-16 weeks of study for production and cloud skills; mentoring, client delivery and strategy are learned on the job and not timed |
Every range is a suggested planning range built from official course durations for closely matching content, compiled October 6, 2026. Course lengths inform the plan; they do not measure how long this transition takes. Weeks convert to months at about 4.3 weeks a month. Portfolio time beyond each stage's project is not included. Each stage is expanded with what you learn, what you build and how you know you’re done in the full roadmap, where the evidence behind each estimate is set out.
What is a Data Scientist?
A data scientist collects and cleans data, then builds, tests and explains statistical and machine learning models, experiments and forecasts that turn it into business decisions. Where a data analyst mainly reports on what happened, a data scientist predicts outcomes and tests what drives them. The deliverable is a validated statistical or machine learning model, experiment or forecast that informs a business decision. Indian postings describe the same work: Meesho's Data Scientist III posting asks you to develop models and run experiments, and Sigmoid's Senior Data Scientist posting covers hypothesis testing and predictive model development.
Two neighboring roles pin the definition down. A Data Analyst turns data into answers. A Data Scientist builds statistical and machine learning models that predict outcomes and test what drives them. A Data Scientist builds and validates the model that answers a business question. A Machine Learning Engineer typically owns the model in production. The full comparison is under Data Scientist vs Data Analyst vs Machine Learning Engineer.
Is data scientist a real job title in India?
Yes. AmbitionBox publishes a full designation ladder for the title in India, from Junior and Associate Data Scientist (285 and 3.3k salary reports) through Data Scientist (61.4k), Senior Data Scientist (17.1k) and Lead Data Scientist (4.7k) to Principal Data Scientist, Data Science Manager, Head Data Science and Director Data Science. Employers use their own variants: Amazon posts Data Scientist, Data Scientist II and Sr Data Scientist roles in Bengaluru, Meesho uses numbered levels such as Data Scientist III, and Sigmoid has Associate Lead and Senior Lead Data Scientist titles. Compare a role by its scope and the experience it asks for, not by the title alone.
Sources: AmbitionBox designation pages, updated October 1 to 6, 2026; Amazon, Meesho and Sigmoid postings with an India location, retrieved October 6, 2026.
Is a GenAI data scientist a separate role?
Employers use the title for Data Scientist roles with a generative AI specialty. In a sample of 100 Naukri postings for 'data scientist', collected October 6, 2026, 20 titles named GenAI, generative AI, LLM, RAG or agentic AI, such as 'Generative AI Data Scientist', but no salary platform reports them as a separate title, so this guide treats them as a specialty of the role. Building applications on large language models is more often the focus of AI engineering roles, though employers draw that line differently.
What does a Data Scientist do day to day?
A data scientist's work runs from a business question to a decision. The responsibilities below are drawn from Indian postings and job descriptions; the last row comes from senior and lead postings.
| Responsibility | What the work involves | Artifact produced |
|---|---|---|
| Frame the business question | Turning a stakeholder's question into a measurable hypothesis, prediction target or decision rule | A problem statement with a success metric and the decision it informs |
| Extract and prepare data | Pulling data from warehouses and big data platforms with SQL, then cleaning and preparing datasets | A documented, reproducible dataset |
| Explore the data | Exploratory data analysis to find patterns, gaps and outliers before modeling | An exploratory notebook with a short written summary |
| Design and analyze experiments | Hypothesis testing and A/B tests that decide whether a change worked | An experiment plan and a results readout with a recommendation |
| Build predictive models | Regression, classification, clustering or forecasting models fitted to the question | Model code and a trained model |
| Validate and monitor models | Training and testing models on held-out data and checking them after release | A validation report and agreed monitoring checks |
| Present results | Explaining findings, with visualizations, to people who are not data specialists | A stakeholder presentation or memo |
| Deliver and mentor (senior roles) | Running client programs, setting direction and mentoring junior data scientists | A delivery plan, reviews and coached team members |
Compiled from Meesho's Data Scientist III posting (develop models and run experiments; mentor junior data scientists), Sigmoid's Senior Data Scientist and Associate Lead postings (data extraction, exploratory data analysis, hypothesis testing, predictive model development, train, test and monitor models, client program delivery) and Naukri's data scientist job description (design solutions, find patterns with algorithms, present findings with visualization), all retrieved October 6, 2026. The postings do not say how the working week divides between these tasks, so no time split is given.
How the work differs by employer
The methods carry across employers; the setting changes. The descriptions below come from the postings reviewed for this page and describe those postings, not every employer of each type.
- Product and internet companies: Meesho's postings center on models and experiments, and its director posting covers production machine learning at scale.
- Analytics and consulting firms: Sigmoid's lead postings combine hands-on modeling with managing a team and delivering client programs.
- Global technology employers in India: Amazon's Bengaluru postings ask for machine learning and statistical modeling, causal inference methods and, in one team, evaluating AI systems.
- IT services and consulting: the largest group of listings on Naukri; how its data science work differs is set out under jobs and salary rather than described here.

Data Scientist salary in India
Data Scientists in India report an average salary of about ₹16.1 lakh a year on AmbitionBox (61.4k salaries, 1 to 8 years of experience, updated October 5, 2026); the middle half of reports falls between about ₹7.6 lakh and ₹17.6 lakh. Other platforms measure differently: Glassdoor shows an average base pay of ₹15.0 lakh, Indeed's job-posting average is ₹12.2 lakh, and PayScale's average base is ₹10.2 lakh. The gap comes from method and sample, not from two different markets.
Salary figures are for India, in INR per year, from named salary platforms and job postings read on October 6, 2026. Each platform measures pay differently (employee-reported, advertised in job postings, or total compensation including bonus and stock), so figures are shown side by side and never averaged. Most platforms do not say whether a figure is CTC or fixed pay. Your pay will depend on employer, city, industry and experience.
The three ways data scientist pay is measured in India
| Measurement family | What it measures | Named sources |
|---|---|---|
| Employee self-reported salary | Annual pay entered by employees. AmbitionBox does not say whether it is CTC or fixed pay; Glassdoor and PayScale report base pay separately from additional pay, and Glassdoor adds a statistical model | AmbitionBox, Glassdoor India, PayScale India |
| Pay advertised in job postings | What employers put in postings: an aggregate over 36 months, and the ranges disclosed in one sample of 100 postings | Indeed India, Naukri.com |
| Self-reported total compensation | Base pay plus stock and bonus, entered mostly by employees of technology and product companies | Levels.fyi |
Families as grouped in the salary research behind this page, from the linked source pages read October 6, 2026. Read each figure only against the family it belongs to. We found no Indian government source publishing Data Scientist pay in the sources reviewed.
What each salary platform reports for data scientists
| Source | Pay measured | Figure as published | Sample | Data date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AmbitionBox | Annual salary, employee-reported; CTC or fixed not stated | ₹16,08,665 average; 25th to 75th percentile ₹7,63,898-₹17,63,481; 10th ₹5,56,960 and 90th ₹25,05,037 | 61.4k reports, 1-8 years of experience | Updated October 5, 2026 |
| Glassdoor India | Base pay, self-reported, with a statistical model; additional pay shown separately | ₹15.0 lakh average base; 25th to 75th percentile ₹10 lakh-₹22.0 lakh; additional pay averages ₹2 lakh | 19,844 salaries | October 2026 |
| Indeed India | Pay advertised in job postings over the past 36 months | ₹12,22,031 average; typical range ₹7,05,728-₹21,16,056 | 315 postings | Updated September 22, 2026 |
| PayScale India | Base salary, employee self-reported; includes under-1-year profiles | ₹10,17,652 average base; 10th to 90th percentile ₹3,11,873-₹24,90,466 | 1,267 salary profiles | Updated July 9, 2026 |
Each row is a separate platform with its own method, sample and pay definition, linked to the page it came from, so the rows are not comparable with one another and are not averaged. AmbitionBox's average, ₹16,08,665, sits nearer its 75th percentile (₹17,63,481) than its 25th (₹7,63,898); the published data does not show why, so read the percentile spread alongside the average. AmbitionBox also displays a narrow 'typical range' around its average, which is not shown here because it is not a pay spread. Glassdoor's FAQ quotes a higher 'average salary' that most likely includes additional pay under a base label; the visible base-pay figure is used instead.
Total compensation at technology and product companies
Levels.fyi collects base pay, stock and bonus, mostly from employees of technology and product companies, so its figures describe a different population and a different measure. They are shown on their own and never set the range for the title.
| Measure | Figure as published |
|---|---|
| Median total compensation (base, stock and bonus) | ₹30,03,236 |
| 25th percentile | ₹18.4 lakh |
| 75th percentile | ₹45.1 lakh |
| 90th percentile | ₹64.7 lakh |
| Median base | ₹27,77,563 |

Data scientist salary in India by experience
AmbitionBox publishes three experience bands for the exact title. Pay rises with each band, and the 6 to 9 year band rests on far fewer reports than the first two.
| Years of experience | Displayed range | Salary reports |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 years | ₹11.3 lakh-₹12.5 lakh | 23.9k salaries |
| 3-6 years | ₹15 lakh-₹16.6 lakh | 35.3k salaries |
| 6-9 years | ₹20.5 lakh-₹22.7 lakh | 2.8k salaries |
Source: AmbitionBox (Info Edge India Ltd), Data Scientist salary profile, updated October 5, 2026, accessed October 6, 2026. Band boundaries are AmbitionBox's own. Each displayed range is a narrow band around that band's average, employee-reported, with CTC or fixed pay not stated. AmbitionBox publishes no exact-title band beyond 9 years.
PayScale reports early-career total compensation, which includes bonus, separately. Its sample includes people with under a year of experience, which AmbitionBox's bands do not.
| Career stage on PayScale | Average total compensation | Salaries reported |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 year (entry level) | ₹5,95,255 | 307 |
| 1-4 years (early career) | ₹10,05,147 | 754 |
Source: PayScale India, Data Scientist, updated July 9, 2026, accessed October 6, 2026. These figures are total compensation, including bonus and overtime, not base salary. PayScale gives its mid-career and later stages only as percentages with no rupee figure, so they are not shown.
What employers advertised, by the years of experience they ask for
Most Indian postings do not show pay: in a sample of 100 Naukri postings for 'data scientist', collected October 6, 2026, 16 disclosed a range. 14 of those are grouped below by the minimum years each posting asks for. Bands with only one disclosed posting are not shown.
| Minimum years asked | Postings used | Employers in the group | Lowest to highest advertised |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-5 years | 7 | Allegis Group, Cognizant, Grid Dynamics, An employer listed as confidential, Tranzeal, UST | ₹3 lakh-₹31 lakh |
| 6-9 years | 5 | Apptad, Cognizant, Optum, PwC | ₹5 lakh-₹40 lakh |
Each range runs from the lowest posted minimum to the highest posted maximum in the group, so it is the spread of this sample, not typical pay. Rows mix several employers and locations. Pay as displayed on Naukri in Lacs P.A.; whether it is CTC or fixed pay is not stated. Two postings are left out of the ranges: one shows a placeholder floor of 0, and one displays 50,000-3 Lacs PA for 8 to 12 years, out of line with every other posting. The 0 to 2 year and 10-plus year groups had one disclosed posting each and are not shown.

Entry titles have their own figures on AmbitionBox: Data Science Intern averages ₹3,50,872 and Data Science Trainee ₹3,67,366 a year, and Junior Data Scientist ₹6,54,932 across 0 to 4 years. PayScale's under-1-year average for Data Scientists is ₹5,95,255 in total compensation. AmbitionBox's 1 to 3 year band for the title, ₹11.3 lakh to ₹12.5 lakh, describes people with at least a year in the job, not freshers.
Data scientist or CA: how the paths differ
Chartered accountancy is a professional qualification: the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) awards it after its own examinations and a period of practical training. Data science has no licensing body; entry runs through a degree, statistics, programming and a portfolio, and most postings also ask for experience. Both reward comfort with numbers, and a commerce student who keeps mathematics or statistics can take either route. The pay figures above describe data scientists only; this page makes no pay comparison with chartered accountants.

Data Scientist jobs and hiring demand in India
On October 6, 2026, Naukri listed 19,525, foundit 14,579 and LinkedIn 10,000+ Indian postings matching 'data scientist': keyword matches, not distinct vacancies. Most ask for experience: Naukri's filter shows 794 of its 19,525 postings accepting 0 years, and in a sample of the first 100 results, 5 accepted 0 years and the median minimum was 4 years.
How many data scientist jobs are listed in India?
| Platform | Listings shown | What the count covers | Observed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naukri | 19,525 | Keyword match, including hybrid, senior and lead titles | October 6, 2026 |
| foundit | 14,579 | Keyword match, including hybrid, senior and lead titles | October 6, 2026 |
| 10,000+ | Keyword match, capped display | October 6, 2026 |
Sources: Naukri, foundit and LinkedIn Jobs searches, October 6, 2026. Single-day keyword snapshots. Counts overlap across boards and include hybrid titles such as Data Scientist / Data Engineer, so they are never added together. LinkedIn caps its display at 10,000+, and Indeed India's round figure of 2,000 looks like a display cap and is not used.
How much experience do data scientist postings ask for?
Data Scientist demand in India skews to experienced hires. Naukri's experience filter counts the postings whose required range includes a given number of years, so the rows overlap and do not add up to 19,525.
| Naukri experience filter | Postings that accept it | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 0 years (freshers) | 794 of 19,525 | The smallest of these filters |
| 1 year | 2,079 of 19,525 | More than accept 0 years, far fewer than accept 3 or 5 |
| 3 years | 6,299 of 19,525 | More than three times the 1-year count |
| 5 years | 10,199 of 19,525 | The largest of these filters |
| 10 years | 7,917 of 19,525 | Postings whose experience range reaches 10 years |

The same picture holds in a sample of 100 Naukri postings for 'data scientist', collected October 6, 2026: the most common minimum was 5 years (22 of 100), then 4 years (21 of 100), with a median minimum of 4 years. Entry routes exist but are smaller: Info Edge, for example, had Data Scientist postings open to 0 to 1 and 0 to 2 years of experience in the sample, and intern, trainee and junior titles carry their own pay data under salary.
What the sampled postings asked for
| Requirement or feature | Postings in the sample |
|---|---|
| Accepts 0 years (minimum 0) | 5 of 100 |
| Minimum 0-2 years | 21 of 100 |
| Minimum 3-5 years | 54 of 100 |
| Minimum 6-9 years | 21 of 100 |
| Minimum 10+ years | 4 of 100 |
| Discloses a salary range | 16 of 100 |
| GenAI / Generative AI / LLM / RAG / Agentic AI in the title | 20 of 100 |
| Hybrid work mode stated | 25 of 100 |
| Remote | 1 of 100 |
| Multi-city posting | 46 of 100 |
| Hybrid title (Data Scientist combined with Engineer / Analyst / Researcher / Trainer) | 11 of 100 |
One collection (sample version 2026-10-06-v1): the first 100 results of the Naukri search for data scientist, sorted by relevance, read on October 6, 2026 in a browser located in India; every posting with disclosed pay is linked under salary. Each job ID was counted once and multi-city postings once; all 100 were live. The sample is relevance-ranked, not random: 84 of 100 list Bengaluru and large IT services employers recur. Counts describe this sample only, and the same collection feeds the advertised pay figures under salary. Skill mentions in posting text were not counted, so no skill frequencies are given.
What education do data scientist postings ask for?
Most accept any graduate. Over the 19,525 Naukri keyword matches, 16,353 were tagged Any Graduate, 12,734 Any Postgraduate, 2,878 B.Tech / B.E., 840 M.Tech, 495 MS/M.Sc (Science), 463 MBA/PGDM and 295 Graduation Not Required. A posting can carry several tags, so they overlap and are not added; the tags show that many listings accept several degree backgrounds, not how employers weigh them. No hard gate such as a license or security clearance appeared in the 100-posting sample.
Which employers are hiring data scientists in India?
| Employer group | Employers named | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| IT services and consulting | Accenture, Altimetrik, Apptad, Ascendion Engineering, Bahwan CyberTek, Birlasoft, Capgemini, Cognizant, EY, Grid Dynamics, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, ITC Infotech, Infosys, Photon, PwC, Quest Global, Tata Consultancy Services, UST | At least one Data Scientist posting live on that day |
| Product, platform and global capability centers | Bread Financial, Conduent, Elanco Innovation And Alliance Centre, Ford Business Solutions, Fractal Analytics, HP, Info Edge, Kroll, Lam Research, Makemytrip, Optum, Syngenta, Thyrocare, VOIS, Volkswagen Group Digital Solutions Private Limited, Wabtec, Walmart, Xylem Water Solutions | At least one Data Scientist posting live on that day |
Employer names are plain text and are not linked. A name means the employer had a live 'data scientist' posting in the sample on October 6, 2026, not that it hires in volume; postings close daily, and no ranking is implied. The sample leans toward large IT services employers, which recur. Company logos shown on Simplilearn program pages are not evidence of hiring and are not used.
Which cities and industries have the most listings?
Bengaluru is listed on the most postings, followed by Hyderabad, Delhi / NCR, Pune, Chennai and Mumbai. Multi-city postings appear under each city they name, so the counts overlap.
| City as Naukri lists it | Postings listing it |
|---|---|
| Bengaluru | 6,906 |
| Hyderabad | 3,632 |
| Delhi / NCR | 3,076 |
| Pune | 2,921 |
| Chennai | 2,324 |
| Mumbai (All Areas) | 1,804 |
Source: Naukri.com city facets for the 'data scientist' search, October 6, 2026. 'Mumbai (All Areas)' and 'Delhi / NCR' overlap their own sub-cities. Never add the rows or read them as shares.
By industry, IT Services & Consulting dominates Naukri's tags, with 11,947 of the 19,525 postings, followed by Analytics / KPO / Research (734), Financial Services (627), Recruitment / Staffing (613) and Software Product (549). The industry pay ranges under salary show IT services at the lower end.
Is hiring for data scientists growing in India?
The closest current signal covers a wider group than this title. Naukri JobSpeak reported that new AI/ML job listings on Naukri grew 31% year on year in August 2026, against 14% for white-collar listings overall. That is one portal's AI/ML role family, not the Data Scientist title, and it measures listings, not hires. No Indian government projection for the title was found.
Source: Naukri JobSpeak for August 2026, published September 11, 2026, accessed October 6, 2026; a broader role-family signal, not a Data Scientist series. A September 2026 figure seen only in press coverage is not used until traced to Naukri's own post.
Data Scientist career progression and future scope in India
The data scientist ladder in India runs from Junior or Associate Data Scientist through Data Scientist, Senior, Lead and Principal on the individual-contributor track, with a separate management track of Data Science Manager, Head and Director. This guide reads seniority as owning the modeling approach and its validation, then production models, client delivery and mentoring.
| Rung | Experience reported and asked | Scope at this rung in Indian postings | AmbitionBox average for this title |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior or Associate Data Scientist | AmbitionBox reporters span 0-4 years (Junior) and 0-5 years (Associate); intern titles sit before this rung | No junior posting was reviewed for scope | Junior Data Scientist: ₹6,54,932 (0-4 years) |
| Data Scientist | AmbitionBox reporters 1-8 years; Amazon Bengaluru Data Scientist II asks for 2+ years | Develops models and runs experiments (Meesho) | ₹16,08,665 (1-8 years) |
| Senior Data Scientist | AmbitionBox reporters 3-11 years; Sigmoid asks for 3-5 years of ML experience, Amazon 4+ years | Hypothesis testing, predictive models, training and monitoring (Sigmoid) | ₹29,79,726 (3-11 years) |
| Lead Data Scientist | AmbitionBox reporters 5-14 years; Sigmoid's Associate Lead asks for 4-8 years and a master's degree, its Senior Lead 8-12 years | Hands-on modeling combined with team and client management (Sigmoid) | ₹35,79,772 (5-14 years) |
| Principal Data Scientist | Meesho asks for 6+ years in AI/ML research; AmbitionBox reporters span 7-18 years | Research-level modeling, PyTorch or TensorFlow (Meesho) | Not captured |
| Data Science Manager, Head or Director | Postings ask for 10+ years with people management (Stripe Bengaluru, Meesho); Sigmoid's director 15+ years | Team building, roadmap and data science strategy | Not captured |
Rungs, experience and scope from AmbitionBox designation pages (Junior, Data Scientist, Senior, Lead; updated October 1 to 6, 2026) and Amazon, Meesho, Sigmoid and Stripe postings with an India location, retrieved October 6, 2026. Pay: AmbitionBox averages for the same title, employee-reported, CTC or fixed not stated. The experience ranges overlap because titles vary by employer. One employer's requirement is not a market rule, and promotion criteria vary by employer.
Individual contributor or manager?
Both tracks exist in India. The postings and AmbitionBox disagree on when the management track starts, and the disagreement is reported rather than averaged: Stripe's Bengaluru Data Science Manager posting asks for 10+ years including 3+ years managing people, and Meesho's Director posting 10+ years including 6 managing people, while AmbitionBox reporters for Data Science Manager span 5 to 14 years. Postings set minimums for specific roles; AmbitionBox shows who holds the title.
Where the path leads after your first data scientist role
One lateral move stays close to the work: toward production machine learning. A Data Scientist builds and validates the model that answers a business question. A Machine Learning Engineer typically owns the model in production. In practice, production ownership varies by team. Moving that way adds feature engineering at depth, training pipelines and serving, which machine learning engineering roles typically emphasize; this guide covers them briefly. The tracks you can choose after the foundations are set out in the roadmap, and the demand signals, with their limits, under jobs.
Data Scientist vs Data Analyst vs Machine Learning Engineer
These roles share data, Python and statistics, and differ mainly in typical emphasis and deliverable. A Data Analyst turns data into answers. A Data Scientist builds statistical and machine learning models that predict outcomes and test what drives them. A Data Scientist builds and validates the model that answers a business question. A Machine Learning Engineer typically owns the model in production. Employers combine the roles differently: some analyst roles build models, and production ownership varies by team.
| Dimension | Data Scientist |
|---|---|
| Primary deliverable | A validated statistical or machine learning model, experiment or forecast that informs a business decision |
| Core skills | Hypothesis testing and A/B experiments; regression and classification modeling; machine learning with model validation (scikit-learn, ensemble models); deep learning and NLP / GenAI models |
| Typical tooling | Python (pandas, scikit-learn), SQL, Power BI or Tableau, TensorFlow or PyTorch, AWS / Azure / GCP, Spark |
| Seniority signal | Hiring skews experienced: of 19,525 Naukri keyword-match postings (6 Oct 2026), 794 accept 0 years; in a 100-posting sample the median minimum is 4 years (5 of 100 accept 0). Seniority shows as owning the modeling approach and its validation, then production models, client delivery and mentoring (roadmap L5). |
Source: the role definition Simplilearn agreed for its India data and analytics guides on October 6, 2026, built from Indian postings and the Naukri sample. Comparable rows for AI Data Analyst and Machine Learning Engineer in India are not yet published, so only this role's row is shown; the two lines above are the wording all three guides use. Salary is not compared: each role's pay comes from its own sources and dates.
Data scientist vs data analyst: the full comparison
A Data Analyst turns data into answers. A Data Scientist builds statistical and machine learning models that predict outcomes and test what drives them. The two roles overlap most at the foundation: both query data with SQL, clean it and chart it. They typically diverge at statistics and modeling, though many analysts use inference and some build simple models. An analyst's work is complete when the question is answered and the answer is communicated; a data scientist's work continues into predicting what comes next and testing whether a change caused an effect. AmbitionBox treats them as separate designations in India.
| Dimension | Data Analyst | Data Scientist |
|---|---|---|
| Core question | What happened, and why? | What will happen, and what would change it? |
| Typical deliverable | An analysis, dashboard or report | A validated model, experiment or forecast that informs a decision |
| Statistics | Descriptive statistics, metrics and inference; some roles also run experiments | Hypothesis testing, experiment design, regression and causal inference |
| Machine learning | Used in some analyst roles; usually not the main deliverable | Core: supervised and unsupervised models, and their validation |
| Typical tools | Excel, SQL, Power BI, Tableau | Python (pandas, scikit-learn), SQL, R, TensorFlow or PyTorch |
| Roadmap stages it centers on | Stages 1 and 2 of this roadmap | Stages 3 and 4, on top of 1 and 2 |
| Covered in depth on this page | No: its skills appear here only as foundation stages | Yes |
Built from the one-line definitions above, the role scope behind this page (Meesho and Sigmoid postings, Naukri's role description, AmbitionBox designations) and this page's skill progression. The columns describe typical emphasis, not fixed boundaries. The Data Analyst column summarizes that role for comparison only. Whether to start as an analyst is covered under career-switch paths.
Data scientist vs machine learning engineer
A Data Scientist builds and validates the model that answers a business question. A Machine Learning Engineer typically owns the model in production. Production ownership varies by team: some data scientists deploy and operate their models, others hand them to machine learning or platform engineers. This guide focuses on choosing, building and validating models to answer a business question, and on experiment design. Feature engineering at production depth, large-scale training and MLOps are typically emphasized more in machine learning engineering roles and are covered here only briefly.
Data science, statistics and MIS reporting: how they differ and overlap
Statistics and MIS reporting are different disciplines. Statistics covers inference, prediction and experimental design; MIS reporting is the regular, reconciled reporting of what operations did. Data science overlaps heavily with statistics in inference, prediction and experimental design, and with reporting in the business data it starts from. Data-science roles often combine these methods with programming, larger and messier data, and delivery into products or decisions. For a statistician, economist or MIS analyst, the move keeps the reasoning about evidence and changes mainly the data, the tools and the output.
| Dimension | Statistics (the discipline) | MIS and business reporting | Data science roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical question | Inference about populations, prediction, and the design of surveys and experiments | What happened in the last period, reconciled to source systems | Prediction, experiments and causal questions tied to a product or business decision |
| Data | Designed samples and experiments, survey and observational data | Curated operational, ERP and finance tables | Transactions, events, logs and text, which usually need cleaning first |
| Main tools | R, SAS, Stata or Python statistical libraries | Excel, SQL and BI tools | Python or R, SQL, scikit-learn, notebooks and version control |
| How results are checked | Model assumptions, confidence intervals, power and, for predictive models, validation | Reconciliation with source totals and agreed definitions | Held-out validation, cross-validation and randomized experiments, alongside the same statistical checks |
| Output | Estimates with stated uncertainty, study designs and statistical models | Scheduled reports, tables and dashboards | A model, experiment readout or forecast that feeds a decision, sometimes running in software |
Comparison written for this page. The columns describe typical emphasis: many statisticians already predict and validate models, and many analysts run experiments.
How is AI changing the data scientist roadmap?
In 20 of 100 sampled Naukri titles, employers named generative AI, LLM, RAG or agentic AI. This roadmap treats using language models in analysis, and as a source of model features, as an add-on after core machine learning. Building applications on large language models, with retrieval and agents, is more often the focus of AI engineering roles and is covered here only briefly.
Is data science the same as statistics?
They overlap heavily. Statistics and data science share inference, prediction and experimental design; data-science roles often add programming, data wrangling, machine learning and product delivery. A B.Sc in Statistics or Mathematics is one of the degree routes Naukri Campus lists for the role, and a statistics graduate starts further along at stage 1 and in parts of stage 3.
Data Scientist skills required, and skill levels
A data scientist needs fluent statistics, Python and SQL, the ability to design and analyze experiments, and enough machine learning to choose, build and validate a model that answers a business question. The skill progression for the role runs from L1 to L5, and L3 and L4 are where the role is defined.
| Level | Focus | Skills | Depth on this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| L1 | Math, Stats & Code Basics | Probability and statistics; linear algebra and calculus; Python or R basics; SQL querying | Full for statistics; programming and SQL as foundations |
| L2 | Data Wrangling & Visualization | Data cleaning and wrangling (pandas); exploratory data analysis; data visualization (Power BI, Tableau, matplotlib); metrics and business analysis | Foundation level here; data analyst roles typically go deeper on SQL, analysis and visualization |
| L3 | Statistical Modeling & Experiments | Hypothesis testing and A/B testing; regression and classification; causal inference; presenting results to stakeholders | Full. This is the role's core. |
| L4 | Machine Learning | scikit-learn supervised and unsupervised models; feature engineering and model validation; ensemble models (random forest, gradient boosting); deep learning (TensorFlow, PyTorch); NLP and generative AI models | Full for choosing, building and validating models; feature engineering at production depth is typically emphasized more in machine learning engineering |
| L5 | Production ML & Leadership | Models in production and MLOps; cloud and distributed data (AWS, Azure or GCP, Spark); scalable data products; mentoring, client delivery and data science strategy | Awareness. Production ownership varies by team: some data scientists deploy and operate models, others hand them to machine learning or platform engineers |
Skill progression from the researched roadmap behind this page, leveled against Indian postings (Meesho, Sigmoid, Amazon India, Stripe Bengaluru), the IIT Madras BS course sequence and AmbitionBox's skills list, October 6, 2026. The depth column says how far this guide goes on each level; related Simplilearn guides go deeper on analysis and on production machine learning.
Skill levels, from beginner to expert
| Proficiency level | You can | You cannot yet | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Work in spreadsheets and read a chart | Write SQL or Python, or explain a confidence interval | Stage 1 of the roadmap |
| Intermediate | Write SQL and Python, clean data and fit a regression | Design an experiment or validate a model on held-out data | Stage 3 |
| Advanced | Run A/B tests and build validated predictive models | Hand models to production or lead a data science agenda | Stage 4 depth, then stage 5 on the job |
| Expert | Own the modeling approach and its validation for a business area | Nothing on this roadmap is new to you | Specialization, production ownership or leading other data scientists |
Levels are Simplilearn's framework, used across this page including the program router; they are not an industry standard.
Which skills do Indian data scientist postings ask for?
Python and SQL lead AmbitionBox's skills list for the Data Scientist title, followed by analytics, data analysis and artificial intelligence. Individual postings add statistics, experiments and machine learning, as the table shows. Skill mentions were not counted across postings, so no frequencies are given; the one measured signal is that 20 of 100 sampled Naukri titles named generative AI, LLM, RAG or agentic AI.
| Posting | Skills it names |
|---|---|
| Meesho, Data Scientist III, Bengaluru | Statistics and linear algebra; SQL, R and Python; designing and running A/B tests; machine learning and neural networks; Spark, Hadoop or Redshift as a bonus |
| Sigmoid, Senior Data Scientist, Bengaluru | Data extraction and exploratory data analysis; NumPy, pandas and scikit-learn; hypothesis testing; predictive model development |
| Sigmoid, Associate Lead and Senior Lead Data Scientist, Bengaluru | Statistical hypothesis testing; linear and logistic regression; SVM, random forest, neural networks, decision trees, K-means and PCA; scikit-learn, TensorFlow and BERT; Spark and cloud |
| Amazon, Data Scientist II, Bengaluru | SQL and Python or R; machine learning and statistical modeling; evaluating AI systems and generative AI benchmarks |
| Amazon, Sr Data Scientist, Bengaluru | Causal inference and econometric methods: difference-in-differences, double machine learning, instrumental variables |
| Meesho, Principal Data Scientist, Bengaluru | PyTorch or TensorFlow; AI/ML research |
| Stripe, Data Science Manager, Bengaluru | Statistical modeling and experimentation design; team building and roadmap prioritization |
Postings retrieved October 6, 2026, as recorded in the skill-progression research behind this page. Each row is one employer's posting, not a market rate. We found no Indian source that puts a salary premium on any of these skills.
How much math and statistics a data scientist uses
Probability and statistics are the math you use every week; linear algebra and calculus explain how models work. Meesho's Data Scientist III posting asks for a strong understanding of statistics and linear algebra, and the IIT Madras BS in Data Science opens with Mathematics and Statistics for Data Science. The depth needed at entry level differs by topic.
| Topic | Where it shows up in data science work | Depth needed at entry level |
|---|---|---|
| Probability and distributions | Modeling uncertainty, choosing a test, simulating outcomes | Fluent: you use it every week |
| Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals | A/B tests, comparing groups, reporting uncertainty | Fluent, including when a test does not apply |
| Regression | Explaining and predicting outcomes while adjusting for other variables | Fluent with linear and logistic regression |
| Experiment design and power | Sizing tests, choosing metrics, avoiding false positives | Working: you can plan a test before it runs |
| Linear algebra | How models represent data; dimensionality reduction such as PCA | Conceptual: vectors, matrices and what a projection does |
| Calculus | How models are fitted by gradient-based optimization | Conceptual: what a gradient is and why it matters |
Topics from the roadmap's first and third stages, the Meesho posting and the IIT Madras BS course list. Depth guidance written for this page.
Experimentation and A/B testing for data scientists
This guide treats experiment design and causal inference as central to the role; analysts and machine learning engineers use them too. Meesho's Data Scientist III posting asks for experience designing and running A/B tests, and Sigmoid's lead postings for statistical hypothesis testing for formal decisions. A good test is decided before it runs.
| Step | Decision you make | If you get it wrong |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Define the decision and the primary metric | What will be decided, and which single metric decides it | Many metrics are checked afterward and one happens to look significant |
| 2. Choose the unit of randomization | Whether users, sessions, sellers or stores are randomized | Units influence each other and the measured effect is biased |
| 3. Calculate power and sample size | The smallest effect worth detecting and how many units that needs | The test is too small to detect a real effect, and the idea is wrongly dropped |
| 4. Run the test and check assignment | How long to run, and whether groups got the planned split | A broken split or a festival week contaminates the comparison |
| 5. Analyze with the planned test | The test and significance level stated before starting | Peeking and stopping early inflate false positives |
| 6. Correct for multiple comparisons | How many variants and segments were tested | One segment out of twenty shows an effect by chance alone |
| 7. Report effect size and uncertainty | The estimated effect, its confidence interval and the decision | A significant but tiny effect drives a costly change |
Steps written for this page from standard experimental practice, as editorial guidance.
Causal inference when you cannot run an experiment
Many business questions cannot be randomized: a fee change reaches every seller, or a policy starts on a fixed date. Causal inference estimates an effect from observational data, and each method rests on an assumption you have to defend. Amazon's Sr Data Scientist posting in Bengaluru names difference-in-differences, double machine learning and instrumental variables. In the roadmap these methods sit in stage 3, after regression.
| Method | When it fits | The assumption it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Difference-in-differences | A change reached one group and not another at a known time | Without the change, both groups would have moved in parallel |
| Instrumental variables | Something shifts the treatment but affects the outcome only through it | The instrument has no other path to the outcome |
| Double machine learning | Many observed confounders, too many to model by hand | Every important confounder is measured |
| Regression discontinuity | Treatment depends on a score crossing a cutoff | Units just either side of the cutoff are otherwise comparable |
| Matching and propensity scores | Treated and untreated units differ on observed characteristics | No important difference is left unobserved |
Methods written for this page; the first three are those named in the Amazon posting, retrieved October 6, 2026.
How much machine learning a data scientist needs before applying
Enough to choose, build and validate a model honestly, with depth in one specialty. Sigmoid's lead postings list SVM, random forest, neural networks, decision trees, K-means and PCA, and Meesho's Data Scientist III posting asks for proficiency in machine learning algorithms.
- This page's entry-level checklist: linear and logistic regression, decision trees and ensembles such as random forest and gradient boosting, clustering, cross-validation, evaluation metrics such as precision, recall and ROC-AUC, and comparison with a simple baseline.
- Later, or in one chosen specialty: deep learning in TensorFlow or PyTorch, NLP and generative AI models, time-series forecasting and computer vision.
Feature engineering: what data scientists need to know
Feature engineering is creating and selecting the inputs a model learns from, and a data scientist uses it in every predictive project. At this role's depth that means sensible encodings, ratios and aggregates built from domain knowledge, feature selection that is validated rather than assumed, and strict care that nothing from the future leaks into training.
Feature engineering at production depth, including feature pipelines and feature stores, is typically a larger part of machine learning engineering roles and is covered here only briefly.
Should you learn Python, R or SQL first?
Learn Python and SQL first, together if you can. SQL gets you the data and Python does the analysis and modeling. Add R later if the roles you want name it.
| Language | What data scientists use it for | When to learn it | Named in postings reviewed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python | Cleaning and analyzing data, statistics, machine learning and automation | First, alongside SQL | Meesho, Sigmoid, Amazon; first on AmbitionBox's skills list for the title |
| SQL | Getting data out of databases and warehouses, joins and aggregations | First, alongside Python | Meesho, Amazon, Sigmoid; on AmbitionBox's skills list |
| R | Statistical analysis and visualization | Later, if your target roles name it | Meesho, Sigmoid; Amazon accepts R as an alternative to Python |
Postings retrieved October 6, 2026, and AmbitionBox's skills list for the title, updated October 5, 2026. Order recommendation written for this page.
Libraries and tools compared
This page recommends scikit-learn as the first modeling library, because it teaches validation and model comparison on the classical models stage 4 starts with. That is a recommendation, not a frequency finding: the postings reviewed name scikit-learn, TensorFlow and PyTorch, but how often each appears across the market was not measured.
| Library or tool | Best at | Named in postings reviewed |
|---|---|---|
| pandas and NumPy | Loading, cleaning, reshaping and summarizing data | Sigmoid Senior Data Scientist |
| scikit-learn | Classical machine learning, validation and model comparison | Sigmoid Senior and Associate Lead |
| TensorFlow | Building and training neural networks | Sigmoid; also on AmbitionBox's skills list |
| PyTorch | Building and training neural networks, common in research code | Meesho Principal |
| Spark | Processing data too large for one machine | Meesho, Sigmoid |
| Power BI and Tableau | Dashboards for business users | Not among the tools recorded from the postings reviewed; taught in all three analytics programs on this page |
Best-at descriptions written for this page. 'Named in postings reviewed' lists the postings in this page's research that name the tool; it is not a count.
How much SQL and data engineering does a data scientist need?
Enough SQL to pull and shape your own data, including joins, aggregations and window functions, and enough pipeline knowledge to work with the people who build them. Sigmoid's postings describe pulling data from enterprise data warehouses and big data platforms, and Meesho's list Spark, Hadoop or Redshift. Building pipelines is data engineering; compare data engineering courses and, for SQL and databases, data management courses.
Which soft skills does a data scientist need?
- Problem framing: turning a vague request into a question data can answer, and saying when it cannot.
- Presenting results: showing findings and their uncertainty so a non-specialist can act on them, which Naukri's job description names as part of the role.
- Stakeholder and client work: Sigmoid's lead postings combine modeling with client program delivery.
- Mentoring: Meesho's Data Scientist III posting includes mentoring junior data scientists.
- Domain knowledge: knowing which effects are plausible and which data is trustworthy in your industry.
Projects that prove each level are set out under portfolio projects, and depth by seniority under career progression.
The data science tool stack
The data science stack runs from SQL and a programming language at the bottom to cloud and distributed data at the top. You need one working choice per layer and an understanding of what the layer is for, not every tool listed.
| Layer | Tools | What it does | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data access | SQL | Querying databases and warehouses, joining and aggregating tables | 1 |
| Programming language | Python, R | Analysis, statistics, modeling and automation | 1 |
| Notebooks and version control | Jupyter, Git, GitHub | Exploring interactively, tracking changes and sharing reproducible work | 1 |
| Data wrangling | pandas, NumPy | Cleaning, reshaping and summarizing data | 2 |
| Visualization | matplotlib, Seaborn, Power BI, Tableau | Charts for exploration, and dashboards for business users | 2 |
| Practice data | Kaggle datasets and other public data | Real, messy data for portfolio projects | 2-4 |
| Statistics and experiments | Statistical functions in Python or R | Hypothesis tests, confidence intervals, power and regression | 3 |
| Classical machine learning | scikit-learn | Supervised and unsupervised models, ensembles, validation and comparison | 4 |

How to become a Data Scientist in India: the step-by-step roadmap
To become a data scientist in India, work through five stages in order: math, statistics and code foundations; data wrangling and visualization; statistical modeling and experiments; machine learning; then production and leadership skills after your first role. Each stage ends with something you build. This page's suggested planning range for the first four stages, from zero, is 39 to 62 weeks of part-time study, about 390 to 620 hours at 10 hours a week, stage projects included.
| Stage | Planning range (part-time) | Before you start | What you learn | What you build | How you know you're done |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Build math, statistics and code foundations | 10-16 weeks | Nothing beyond Class 12 mathematics; no coding needed | Probability and statistics, the linear algebra and calculus behind models, Python or R to scripting level, and SQL queries with joins and aggregations | A notebook that loads a public dataset with SQL and Python and describes it with correct statistics | You can query and summarize a dataset and explain a confidence interval without notes |
| 2. Wrangle, explore and visualize data | 6-10 weeks | Stage 1 done: you can query and summarize a dataset | Cleaning and reshaping messy data with pandas, exploratory data analysis, charts in matplotlib and one BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, and business metrics | An exploratory analysis of a messy real dataset, with a short written summary of what it shows | You can take a raw dataset to a clean, documented table and a chart a manager understands |
| 3. Model statistically and run experiments | 8-12 weeks | Stage 2 done: a clean, documented dataset and a clear chart | Hypothesis testing, A/B test design and analysis, linear and logistic regression, causal inference from observational data, and presenting a result and its uncertainty to non-specialists | An A/B test analysis with a pre-stated metric, a power calculation and a written recommendation | You can estimate how large a measured difference is, how uncertain that estimate is and what decision it supports |
| 4. Learn machine learning and validate models | 15-24 weeks | Stage 3 done: you can size an effect and its uncertainty | Regression, classification, clustering and ensemble models such as random forest and gradient boosting in scikit-learn, cross-validation and model comparison, and deep learning in TensorFlow or PyTorch, with NLP or generative AI models as a first specialty | A predictive model for a business outcome, validated against a baseline, with an honest error analysis | You can defend why your model beats a simple baseline on data it never saw |
| 5. Production ML and leadership, after your first role | 10-16 weeks of study for production and cloud skills; mentoring, client delivery and strategy are learned on the job and not timed | Stage 4 done, and a first data science role | How models are packaged, deployed and monitored, one cloud ML platform, distributed data with Spark, and, on the job, mentoring, client delivery and setting data science direction | A model handed to engineering with documentation, monitoring checks and a plan for retraining | A model you built is used in a live decision process and someone else can maintain it |
Stage sequence from the researched data scientist skill progression behind this page. Ranges assume about 10 hours of study a week and the earlier stages done, include each stage's project, and are planning estimates, not measured outcomes. Stage 5 comes after your first role: its production and cloud skills carry a study range, while mentoring, client delivery and strategy are learned on the job and are given none. The before-you-start and done checks are editorial guidance built from the stage order and each stage's project, not published benchmarks.
Starting after Class 10 or Class 12
Students after Class 10 or 12 usually ask what to study, whether PCB works and whether JEE is needed. The routes below come from Indian education sources. In each, the roadmap skills are learned inside or alongside the degree, so the durations are full-time education, not study added on top.
| Starting point | What to choose | Full-time duration | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| After Class 10 | A stream with mathematics: Science with Mathematics (PCM or PCMB), or Commerce with Mathematics or Statistics. CBSE offers Data Science (subject code 844) as a skill subject in Class 11 and 12 | 2 school years, then a degree | Naukri Campus, February 19, 2026; CBSE curriculum 2026-2027 |
| After Class 12, a three-year degree | B.Sc Data Science, BCA, BBA in Business Analytics, or B.Sc Statistics, Mathematics or Economics | 3 years | Naukri Campus; UGC undergraduate framework |
| After Class 12, a four-year degree | B.Tech in Data Science, AI or Computer Science, or a four-year undergraduate program | 4 years | Naukri Campus; UGC undergraduate framework |
| After Class 12, the online route | IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications: open to Class 12 pass-outs from any stream, with Mathematics and English in Class 10 expected. Regular entry is through a qualifier process: four weeks of coursework in four foundation courses with assignments, then an in-person qualifier exam with minimum scores. Candidates eligible for the current year's JEE Advanced can join directly | Up to 8 years in all: Foundation 1 to 3 years, Diploma 1 to 2 years each, degree 1 to 2 years | IIT Madras academics and admissions pages |
Sources: Naukri Campus, How to Become a Data Scientist in India, February 19, 2026; CBSE Department of Skill Education, Data Science (844), Class XI and XII, session 2026-2027; University Grants Commission undergraduate curriculum and credit framework; IIT Madras BS academics and admissions pages. Accessed October 6, 2026; the IIT Madras admissions page was re-checked October 7, 2026.
With PCB, or without JEE
Naukri Campus names PCM or PCMB as the best Science streams for this path, so a biology student who also takes mathematics keeps the usual degree routes open. IIT Madras's online BS accepts Class 12 pass-outs from any stream, but it expects Mathematics and English in Class 10 and admits through its qualifier process; a student without Class 12 mathematics should plan on 4 to 12 extra weeks to rebuild the math. JEE is not needed for the job: Naukri's education tags for data scientist postings name degrees, not entrance exams, and the B.Sc, BCA and BBA routes above are among the options Naukri Campus lists.
Choose an emphasis after the foundations
Once the foundations and core machine learning are in place, the postings reviewed for this guide lean toward one of three emphases, and many roles mix them. Choose by the deliverable you want: decisions from experiments, models that predict, or work built on language models.
| Track | What you build | Where it is covered |
|---|---|---|
| Analytics and business data science | Experiments, causal analysis and business metrics that drive decisions | In depth here for experiments and causal inference; data analyst and business analyst roles share much of this work |
| Applied machine learning | Predictive models, carried toward production with engineers | In depth here for choosing, building and validating models; machine learning engineering roles typically go deeper on production |
| Generative AI and AI workflows | Analysis and features built with language models | Briefly here; AI engineering roles typically go deeper on applications built on language models |
The three emphases are this guide's editorial grouping, not a market classification. Each matches postings reviewed for it: Amazon's Sr Data Scientist posting (causal inference), Sigmoid's postings (predictive model development) and the 20 of 100 sampled Naukri titles naming generative AI, LLM, RAG or agentic AI. The related India role guides are not yet published, so none is linked.
The evidence behind each duration
| Stage | Planning range | Evidence strength | Benchmarked against |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Build math, statistics and code foundations | 10-16 weeks | Reasoned from adjacent data | DeepLearning.AI Mathematics for Machine Learning and Data Science (on Coursera): 12 weeks at 5 hours a week, with 94 hours of content listed. IBM Python for Data Science, AI & Development and IBM Databases and SQL for Data Science with Python: 2 weeks at 10 hours a week each. NPTEL Data Science for Engineers (IIT Madras): 8 weeks, with no weekly hours stated, so it corroborates the range without entering the arithmetic. |
| 2. Wrangle, explore and visualize data | 6-10 weeks | Reasoned from adjacent data | IBM Data Analysis with Python and IBM Data Visualization with Python: 2 weeks at 10 hours a week each. Google Go Beyond the Numbers: 3 weeks at 10 hours a week. None of the three teaches Power BI, so up to 3 weeks of practice sit at the top of the range. NPTEL Python for Data Science (IIT Madras): 4 weeks, no weekly hours stated. |
| 3. Model statistically and run experiments | 8-12 weeks | Reasoned from adjacent data | Google The Power of Statistics and Google Regression Analysis: 3 weeks at 10 hours a week each. University of Pennsylvania A Crash Course in Causality: 2 weeks at 10 hours a week. Up to 4 more weeks are added for an A/B test project and practice presenting results to stakeholders. |
| 4. Learn machine learning and validate models | 15-24 weeks | Reasoned from adjacent data | Machine Learning Specialization (DeepLearning.AI and Stanford Online): 2 months at 10 hours a week, 95 hours listed. Deep Learning Specialization (DeepLearning.AI): 129 hours listed; the low end counts two of its five courses. NPTEL Introduction to Machine Learning (IIT Madras): 12 weeks, no weekly hours stated. PyTorch and generative AI models sit in the top of the range. |
| 5. Production ML and leadership, after your first role | 10-16 weeks | Reasoned from adjacent data (study component only) | DeepLearning.AI Introduction to Machine Learning in Production: 1 week at 10 hours a week. IBM Introduction to Big Data with Spark and Hadoop: 2 weeks at 10 hours a week. Duke MLOps Specialization: 145 hours listed, less the Python course that repeats stage 1. AmbitionBox reports and Sigmoid postings put Lead Data Scientist at about 6 to 12 years of experience, which is why the leadership half carries no study range. |
Sources: provider course pages as listed, accessed October 6, 2026. 'Reasoned from adjacent data' means the range combines two or more verifiable figures by inference; course lengths inform a range but do not measure how long this transition takes. NPTEL courses from IIT Madras state no weekly hours, so they corroborate ranges without entering the arithmetic. Stage 4 is the widest because deep learning depth varies.
Suggested planning ranges by starting point
The stage sum and the background ranges measure different things. The stage sum is the whole path from zero. The background ranges count only the stages each starting point still needs, and the two school rows are full-time education rather than part-time study. Each row states its assumptions. None includes the job search, and none is a measured hiring outcome.
| Starting background | Suggested planning range | Evidence strength | What it assumes, and its basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| School student choosing a stream after Class 10 | 5-6 years of full-time education to a graduate entry point | Reasoned from adjacent data | Class 11 and 12 (two years) plus a 3- or 4-year degree, from the CBSE and UGC frameworks. The roadmap skills are learned inside or alongside the degree. |
| Class 12 pass-out from any stream | 3-4 years: a full-time undergraduate degree | Reasoned from adjacent data | Degree length comes from UGC and Naukri Campus; readiness at graduation is not measured. IIT Madras's online BS has its own qualifier process and can take longer, so it is not a faster route. |
| B.Tech or B.Sc graduate, or fresher | 8-12 months part-time | Reasoned from adjacent data | Assumes college math, some Python and about 10 hours a week, stage projects included. College math compresses stage 1 to 4 to 8 weeks; stages 2 to 4 in full. Instahyre's India guide gives 8 to 12 months for CS or engineering graduates with some Python. Graduates from non-quantitative degrees should take stage 1 in full, about 9 to 14 months. |
| Data analyst or working IT professional | 6-12 months part-time, alongside the job | Reasoned from adjacent data | Assumes about 10 hours a week alongside the job. Already holds SQL and much of stage 2; needs a math top-up, any missing Python, stage 3 and stage 4. Google's Advanced Data Analytics certificate, which assumes analytics experience, states 6 months at 10 hours a week and anchors the floor. BI-only analysts with no coding should use the next row. |
| Commerce, humanities or business professional | 12-18 months part-time, often via a data analyst role first | Editorial estimate | Assumes no math since school, no programming and about 10 hours a week. Stages 1 to 4 in full plus 4 to 12 weeks to rebuild Class 11 and 12 math. The time above the stage sum rests on India career guides, not a measured study. Instahyre gives 16 to 24 months for complete beginners, longer than this range: with no math since Class 10, expect the upper end or beyond. |
Planning ranges from the roadmap timeline research behind this page, built from official course durations, the CBSE, UGC and IIT Madras frameworks, and Indian career guides (Instahyre, Naukri Campus, JobRise, Fueler), accessed October 6, 2026. Guides and provider certificate lengths are not measurements; where they disagree with a range, the disagreement is stated in the row.
How many hours a week, and is three months enough?
This page's planning ranges assume about 10 hours of study a week. The first four stages add up to about 390 to 620 hours, so you can scale the time to your own pace; full-time study shortens the calendar time. At about 10 hours a week, the stage sum comes to about 9 to 14 months. Three months at 10 hours a week covers roughly the first stage, planned at 10 to 16 weeks, not entry-level readiness.
Starting in an analyst role and moving across
Instahyre's India guide says entry often comes through a data analyst role, and most data scientist postings ask for experience (a median minimum of 4 years in the 100-posting Naukri sample), so a related first job is a practical route; it is common, not required. This page gives a suggested planning range for the study, 6 to 12 months for a working analyst, but no time for the internal transfer itself, which depends on the employer. The analytics foundation those roles build is covered by data analytics courses.
The three stages between learning and hiring
| Stage | What it involves | What it produces |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio consolidation | Choosing a few projects, finishing them properly and writing up the question, method, validation and decision for each | Documented repositories a reviewer can run and follow |
| Public write-ups | Explaining at least one project in plain language for a non-specialist reader | A write-up or short presentation that shows you can communicate a result |
| Interview preparation | Practicing SQL, statistics and explanations of your own projects and their trade-offs | Readiness for the competency areas under interview preparation |
Written for this page as editorial guidance. No duration is given, because it depends on your projects and target employers.
Qualifications and prerequisites for a Data Scientist
The hard prerequisites are mathematics, statistics and a programming language, plus SQL. Most Indian postings expect a bachelor's degree of any kind and some experience.
| Prerequisite | Necessity | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Class 10 and 12 mathematics | Strongly recommended | Statistics and machine learning build on it; IIT Madras's online BS expects Mathematics and English in Class 10 |
| Statistics and probability | Essential, learned in stage 1 | The basis of experiments, inference and model validation |
| Python or R, and SQL | Essential, learned in stage 1 | Named in the Meesho, Sigmoid and Amazon postings reviewed; Python and SQL lead AmbitionBox's skills list |
| A bachelor's degree | Expected by most postings | 16,353 of 19,525 Naukri postings were tagged any graduate; 295 graduation not required |
| A master's degree | Asked for in some senior postings | Sigmoid's Associate Lead posting asks for a minimum master's; Meesho's Principal prefers an M.Tech or PhD |
| Work experience | Asked for by most postings | The median minimum in the 100-posting Naukri sample was 4 years; 5 of 100 accepted 0 years |
| Machine learning | Learned on the roadmap, not before it | Stage 4 teaches it |
| Domain knowledge | Useful | Helps you frame questions and judge which results are plausible |
Necessity ratings are this page's guidance. Sources: Naukri.com education tags and a sample of 100 Naukri postings for 'data scientist', collected October 6, 2026; postings and AmbitionBox pages retrieved October 6, 2026; IIT Madras admissions page.
Do you need a degree to become a data scientist in India?
In most postings, yes. Of 19,525 Naukri 'data scientist' postings on October 6, 2026, 16,353 were tagged Any Graduate and 295 Graduation Not Required. The tags do not show how often employers hire candidates without a degree. Two of the three Simplilearn programs on this page also require a bachelor's degree for entry.
Do you need a master's degree or PhD?
Not to start, in the postings reviewed. 12,734 of the 19,525 Naukri postings were tagged Any Postgraduate, 840 M.Tech and 495 MS/M.Sc (Science); a posting can carry several tags, so these overlap with the graduate tags and are not added. Requirements rise with seniority: Sigmoid's Associate Lead posting asks for a minimum master's degree, and Meesho's Principal Data Scientist posting prefers an M.Tech or PhD.
Which degree is best for becoming a data scientist?
Naukri Campus lists B.Sc Data Science, B.Tech in Data Science, AI or Computer Science, BCA, BBA in Business Analytics and B.Sc Statistics, Mathematics or Economics. B.Tech / B.E. was tagged on 2,878 of the 19,525 Naukri postings and Any Graduate on 16,353. The tags show that many listings accept several degree backgrounds; they do not measure how employers weigh a degree against skills. For comparing degree and certificate programs, see data science courses and programs.
Does data science need coding?
Yes. At entry level that means Python scripts with pandas and scikit-learn, SQL queries with joins and aggregations, and Git for version control. The Meesho, Sigmoid and Amazon postings reviewed name Python, R or SQL. If you prefer analysis with little code, data analyst roles lean more on SQL, spreadsheets and BI tools.
Are there hard gates such as licenses or entrance exams?
None appeared in the 100-posting Naukri sample: no license and no clearance requirement. Naukri's education tags for these postings name degrees, not entrance exams; an exam such as JEE is part of some degree routes, not of the job.
Before you start: a quick self-check
- Comfortable with Class 10 algebra? If not, start with the math in stage 1.
- Know what a mean, median and standard deviation tell you? If not, start with stage 1 statistics.
- Comfortable working in spreadsheets? If not, practice before stage 2.
- Willing to write code most days? If not, consider a data analyst role first.
How to switch careers into data science
The shortest planned paths into data science start from roles that already hold part of the roadmap: data analysts and IT professionals, then engineering and science graduates. The longest starts from a non-technical background, and most postings also expect experience, so many switchers start in an analyst role.
| Current background | What transfers | What to add | Suggested planning range (evidence strength) |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech or B.Sc graduate, or fresher | College math and some programming | Applied Python and SQL, data wrangling, experiments and machine learning | 8-12 months part-time (reasoned from adjacent data) |
| Data analyst | SQL, data cleaning, dashboards, metrics and stakeholder work | A math top-up, statistics for experiments, causal inference and machine learning | 6-12 months part-time (reasoned from adjacent data) |
| Software engineer or IT professional | Programming, Git, data handling and deployment | Statistics, experiment design, model evaluation and business framing | 6-12 months part-time (reasoned from adjacent data) |
| Commerce, humanities or business professional | Domain knowledge and, in commerce, some statistics | Math from Class 11 and 12 level, then all four entry stages | 12-18 months part-time (editorial estimate) |
Timelines from the roadmap timeline research behind this page, at about 10 hours a week alongside a job, accessed October 6, 2026. They are estimates, not measured transition outcomes, and they exclude the job search. The software engineer row uses the working IT professional estimate.
From data analyst to data scientist
An analyst already holds the data handling and much of the visualization the role needs. The work is a math top-up, statistics for experiments and machine learning itself, a suggested planning range of 6 to 12 months of part-time study. An analyst who works only in BI tools, with no coding, should plan on the longer non-technical estimate. How the two roles differ is under role comparison.
From software engineer to data scientist
Programming, Git and deployment transfer directly. What the roadmap adds is statistical reasoning: experiment design, inference and honest model evaluation, which are stages 3 and 4. If you would rather build and run models in production than design experiments, machine learning engineering may suit you better: A Data Scientist builds and validates the model that answers a business question. A Machine Learning Engineer typically owns the model in production.
From commerce, humanities or a business background
Plan for the longest path: a suggested planning range of 12 to 18 months of part-time study to an entry-level portfolio, an editorial estimate. Commerce graduates who studied mathematics or statistics start ahead of humanities graduates who dropped math after Class 10, who should expect the upper end or beyond. A data analyst role is a realistic first step: one Indian guide puts non-tech to data analyst at 6 to 8 months of daily practice, a different and shorter goal than data scientist readiness. Your domain knowledge in finance, sales or operations is an asset on the analytics and business track.
Switching while working full time
Every timeline on this page already assumes part-time study of about 10 hours a week alongside a job. Study toward the stage your current role is closest to, use your employer's data questions as project ideas where you are allowed to, and treat an internal move into an analytics team as a stepping stone.
Portfolio projects that show you can work as a Data Scientist
A data scientist portfolio should show decisions supported by evidence, not only models that train. Each project should start from a business question and end with a recommendation, with the method and its validation in between.
| Project archetype | What it proves | What it must document | Posting requirement it answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| A/B test analysis on a public or simulated experiment | You can design and analyze an experiment honestly | The decision, primary metric, power calculation, test used and recommended action | A/B tests and hypothesis testing (Meesho, Sigmoid) |
| Predictive model for a business outcome, such as churn, default or demand | You can build and validate a model that answers a question | The baseline, validation method, metrics, error analysis and what the model should not be used for | Predictive model development (Sigmoid) |
| Causal analysis of observational data | You can estimate an effect when no experiment exists | The method chosen, the assumption it rests on and how you checked it | Causal inference methods (Amazon) |
| Exploratory analysis with a stakeholder memo | You can find what matters in messy data and explain it | Data cleaning steps, the main findings and a one-page memo for a non-specialist | Exploratory data analysis and presenting findings (Sigmoid, Naukri) |
| NLP or generative AI evaluation project | You can work in one specialty | The data, model choice, how quality was measured, and limits | Evaluating AI systems and generative AI benchmarks (Amazon) |

Suggested portfolio project: retention analysis and intervention
One worked example, as editorial guidance: it describes what to build and show, not a result anyone has achieved. It suits Indian subscription businesses such as telecom, OTT streaming or fintech apps, where keeping customers is a recurring business question.
- Business question: which customers are likely to leave in the next period, and which retention intervention should be tested?
- Inputs: a public customer-churn dataset or an explicitly labeled synthetic dataset of customers and their activity, with a clear time cutoff between the inputs and the outcome.
- The work: define churn precisely; remove anything recorded after the cutoff so future information cannot leak into training; build a simple baseline; split the data by time where it allows; compare a stronger model with the baseline; inspect errors by subgroup such as region, plan or tenure; then discuss which intervention to test.
- Deliverables: a reproducible notebook or package, a data dictionary, an evaluation report and a one-page decision memo.
- Failure cases to check: future information leaked into training, an imbalanced outcome hidden by accuracy alone, a threshold that is unstable from one period to the next, and correlation read as causation.
- Evidence to show: the baseline comparison, uncertainty where appropriate, worked error examples and stated limits on any causal claim.
- Extension: propose an A/B test of the intervention separately. A model that predicts churn well does not show that an intervention makes customers stay; only a designed experiment or a defended causal method can estimate that.
How many projects do you need?
We found no measured number of projects employers require. This page's editorial guidance is depth over count: a few complete projects like the one above, each with a question, a validated method, documented code and a recommendation, rather than many unfinished ones.
How to use GitHub and Kaggle
Public datasets, including Kaggle's, are practical sources for projects, and GitHub is a common place to show the code. A competition leaderboard shows modeling skill on a problem someone else framed; a GitHub project with a clear write-up also shows that you can frame the question and explain the result. The postings reviewed do not say how employers weigh Kaggle results.
What every project write-up should state
- The business question and the decision it informs
- Where the data came from and how it was cleaned
- The method, and why it fits the question
- How the result was validated, including the baseline
- What the result means, its uncertainty and its limits
- How to run the code
What rigorous, production-grade data science means
A notebook result works once. Rigorous data science holds up on new data, can be reproduced and is used only for the decision it was built for. These competencies are hard to learn from tutorials, because a tutorial dataset is already clean and its answer is already known.
| Competency | The failure it prevents |
|---|---|
| A metric and analysis plan written before the data is seen | Choosing the result after the fact, then believing it |
| Power calculations before every experiment | Calling a real effect a failure because the test was too small |
| Held-out validation and a simple baseline | A model that looks accurate but is no better than a rule of thumb |
| Leakage checks on every feature | A model that performs well in testing and fails on live data |
| Confidence intervals reported with every estimate | A decision taken on a precise-looking number that is mostly noise |
| Multiple-comparison corrections | One segment out of many showing an effect by chance and being acted on |
| Reproducible code, data versions and a fixed random seed | A result no one, including you, can reproduce a month later |
| Documented assumptions and limits | A model used for a question it was never built to answer |
| A monitoring plan agreed with engineering | A model that silently degrades as the data changes |
Written for this page. Sigmoid's Senior Data Scientist posting includes training, testing and monitoring models, the work these competencies protect.
Where MLOps fits
A data scientist needs to hand a model over in a state engineers can run: versioned code, documented inputs and outputs, and agreed checks for drift. Deploying, serving and monitoring models at production scale is MLOps, which this roadmap places in stage 5, after your first role. Who owns it varies by team: some data scientists deploy and operate their models, others hand them to machine learning or platform engineers. Meesho's director posting, which covers owning models from strategy to deployment and monitoring, is one example of that responsibility at a senior level.
How to prepare for a Data Scientist interview
Prepare for the skills postings ask for, and for explaining your own projects in depth. The learning and interview suggestions below are an editorial preparation framework built from posting requirements, not a description of how any employer runs interviews.
| Competency area | What it assesses | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| SQL | Whether you can get and shape the data yourself | Practice joins, aggregations and window functions on real schemas |
| Statistics and experimentation | Whether you can design a test and interpret its result | Walk through one of your A/B tests: metric, power, test, decision |
| Machine learning and evaluation | Whether you can choose, validate and explain a model | Explain your model's baseline, metrics and failure cases |
| Python coding | Whether you write clean, working analysis code | Rework one project's code so someone else can run it |
| Business case reasoning | Whether you can turn a vague question into an analysis plan | Practice framing questions from a product or business scenario |
| Communication | Whether a non-specialist can act on your result | Present one project in five minutes to someone outside data |
Framework written for this page from the skills named in the Meesho, Sigmoid and Amazon India postings and the roadmap's stages 1 to 4.
Degree, certificate or self-study: what matters for a Data Scientist?
No certification is required to become a data scientist, and a certificate does not show what a portfolio of validated work shows. A structured program gives you a sequence, deadlines and feedback; what you still have to build yourself is a public portfolio and practice explaining it.
Degree, online course or self-study?
| Route | Time stated in the sources | What it gives you | What it does not prove on its own | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate degree | 3 or 4 years full time (UGC framework) | Depth, a credential and the any-graduate tag most postings ask for | Data science skills, unless the degree taught them | School leavers |
| Online degree | Up to 8 years for the IIT Madras BS, at your own pace | A degree while working, open to Class 12 pass-outs from any stream through a qualifier process | That it is faster: it can take longer than a campus degree | Working learners without a degree |
| Structured program or certificate | Varies by program; see each program's own page | Sequence, deadlines, graded projects and feedback | The full roadmap: the analytics programs on this page cover the foundation stages | Graduates who need applied skills |
| Self-paced roadmap | A suggested planning range of 39-62 weeks for the first four stages, at about 10 hours a week | Flexibility at your own pace | Anything beyond what your portfolio shows | Disciplined learners with a quantitative background |

Do certificates matter, or only projects?
We found no measure of how Indian employers weigh certificates against projects, so this page makes no ranking. Most postings ask for a degree and experience. The practical order is to build first and certify alongside.
Is a data analytics certificate enough to become a data scientist?
No. An analytics certificate covers the foundation: SQL, Python, BI tools and an introduction to machine learning. The data scientist role also needs experiment design, machine learning depth and a portfolio of validated models. For analytics certificate options, see data analytics courses.
What the Simplilearn programs on this page are, and are not
The three Simplilearn programs on this page are AI-powered data analytics programs, not data science programs, and they cover the foundation stages of the roadmap. The certificates are issued for data analytics programs; none is a degree. This page makes no claim about placement rates, salary increases or job outcomes for any program, and none is published for these programs. For programs that go further into machine learning, compare data science courses.

The biggest mistakes people make learning data science
| Mistake | Why it fails | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping statistics to reach machine learning sooner | You cannot judge whether a model or a test result will hold up | Pass the stage 3 done check before stage 4 |
| Collecting courses instead of finishing projects | A completion certificate shows you finished a course, not that you can do the work | Finish one project end to end before starting the next course |
| Using only clean tutorial datasets | Real data is messy, and cleaning it is part of the job | Use at least one raw, public dataset you had to clean yourself |
| Reporting accuracy without a baseline | A model can be accurate and still useless | Compare every model with a simple baseline |

Key data science terms explained
- Data science
- Data science is the practice of using statistics, programming and knowledge of a business domain to turn raw data into models, forecasts and recommendations that inform decisions.
- CTC (cost to company)
- CTC is the total yearly amount an Indian employer spends on an employee: fixed pay, variable pay and employer contributions. In-hand pay, after deductions, is lower. Most salary platforms do not say whether their figures are CTC or fixed pay.
- Lakh and LPA
- A lakh is 1,00,000 rupees, written ₹1,00,000. LPA means lakh per annum, so a salary of 16 LPA is ₹16 lakh a year. Job boards such as Naukri display pay as Lacs P.A.
- Hypothesis testing
- Hypothesis testing is a statistical procedure for judging whether a difference or relationship seen in data is larger than chance alone would plausibly produce.
- P-value
- A p-value is the probability of a result at least as extreme as the one observed if there were no real effect. A small p-value is evidence against the no-effect assumption; it does not say how large an effect is.
- A/B test
- An A/B test is a randomized experiment that assigns users or other units at random to a control version or a variant, so a difference in a chosen metric can be attributed to the change.
- Statistical power
- Statistical power is the probability that an experiment detects an effect of a given size if an effect of that size exists. It depends mostly on sample size and is worked out before the test starts.
- Causal inference
- Causal inference is the set of methods for estimating the effect of one variable on another, including from observational data where no randomized experiment was run.
- Regression
- Regression is a family of models that estimate how an outcome changes with one or more inputs. Linear regression predicts a number; logistic regression predicts the probability of a category.
- Classification
- Classification is a supervised learning task in which a model assigns each record to a category, such as whether a loan applicant will default.
- Cross-validation
- Cross-validation estimates how a model will perform on new data by repeatedly training it on part of the data and testing it on the part held out.
- Overfitting
- Overfitting is when a model learns the noise in its training data, so it scores well on that data and poorly on new data.
- Data leakage
- Data leakage is when information that would not be available at prediction time, such as a future value or the answer itself, gets into model training and makes performance look better than it will be in use.
- Exploratory data analysis (EDA)
- Exploratory data analysis is the first look at a dataset, using summaries and charts to understand its structure, quality and patterns before any model is built.
- Ensemble model
- An ensemble model combines many simpler models, usually decision trees, into one prediction. Random forest and gradient boosting are the common types.
- Feature engineering
- Feature engineering is creating and selecting the input variables a model learns from, such as ratios, counts or encoded categories, so that useful patterns are easier to learn.
- MLOps
- MLOps is the set of practices for deploying, monitoring and updating machine learning models in production, so a model keeps working as the data changes.
Data Scientist in India: frequently asked questions
What does a data scientist do?
A data scientist collects and cleans data, then builds, tests and explains statistical and machine learning models, experiments and forecasts that turn it into business decisions. Where a data analyst mainly reports on what happened, a data scientist predicts outcomes and tests what drives them. The deliverable is a validated model, experiment or forecast that informs a decision. In India the title runs on a ladder from Junior or Associate Data Scientist to Principal Data Scientist and Head of Data Science.
How do I become a data scientist in India?
Work through five stages in order: math, statistics and code; data wrangling and visualization; statistical modeling and experiments; machine learning; then production skills after your first role. Build a project at each stage. Most Indian postings ask for a graduate degree of any kind, and many ask for experience, so a first job as a data analyst is a common stepping stone.
How long does it take to become a data scientist in India?
It depends on where you start. These are suggested planning ranges at about 10 hours of study a week, with stage projects included, not measured outcomes: 8 to 12 months to an entry-level portfolio for a B.Tech or B.Sc graduate with college math and some Python, 6 to 12 months for a working data analyst or IT professional who already uses SQL, and 12 to 18 months for a commerce, humanities or business professional, an editorial estimate. From zero, the first four roadmap stages total 39 to 62 weeks. None of these includes the job search.
Is three months enough to become a data scientist?
Not from scratch. At about 10 hours of study a week, three months covers roughly the first roadmap stage, math, statistics, Python and SQL, which this page plans at 10 to 16 weeks. Reaching entry-level skills means the first four stages, a suggested planning range of 39 to 62 weeks. Someone already working as an analyst or engineer starts further along, but still needs statistics and machine learning.
How can I become a data scientist after 12th?
Take a 3- or 4-year undergraduate degree first. Naukri Campus lists B.Sc Data Science, B.Tech in data science, AI or computer science, BCA, BBA in Business Analytics and B.Sc Statistics, Mathematics or Economics as routes. IIT Madras also runs an online BS in Data Science open to Class 12 pass-outs from any stream; it expects Mathematics and English in Class 10, and regular entry is through a qualifier process of four weeks of coursework and an in-person qualifier exam. Learn Python, SQL and statistics alongside the degree and build projects.
Which stream should I choose after 10th to become a data scientist?
Choose a stream with mathematics. Naukri Campus recommends Science with Mathematics (PCM or PCMB) or Commerce with Mathematics or Statistics. CBSE schools can also offer Data Science (subject code 844) in Class 11 and 12. From Class 10, expect about 5 to 6 years of full-time education, Class 11 and 12 plus a degree, before a graduate entry point.
Can a PCB student become a data scientist?
Yes, but plan to build the mathematics. Naukri Campus names PCM or PCMB as the best Science streams, so taking Mathematics alongside PCB keeps the usual degree routes open. Without Class 12 mathematics, IIT Madras's online BS in Data Science accepts Class 12 pass-outs from any stream, but it expects Mathematics and English in Class 10 and admits through a qualifier process; plan on 4 to 12 extra weeks to rebuild the math.
Is JEE required to become a data scientist?
Not for the job itself. Naukri's education tags for 'data scientist' postings name degrees, not entrance exams: 16,353 of 19,525 postings on October 6, 2026 were tagged any graduate. Naukri Campus lists B.Sc, BCA and BBA analytics degrees alongside B.Tech. IIT Madras's online BS in Data Science admits through its own qualifier process, and candidates eligible for the current year's JEE Advanced can join it directly.
What is the salary of a data scientist in India?
On AmbitionBox, 61.4k Data Scientists report an average of about ₹16.1 lakh a year (1 to 8 years of experience, updated October 5, 2026), with the middle half between about ₹7.6 lakh and ₹17.6 lakh. Glassdoor shows an average base pay of ₹15.0 lakh, Indeed's job-posting average is ₹12.2 lakh and PayScale's average base is ₹10.2 lakh. Each measures pay differently, so they are not averaged.
What salary can a fresher data scientist expect in India?
We found no 0-year figure for the Data Scientist title in the sources checked on October 6, 2026. Entry titles have their own: on AmbitionBox, Data Science Intern averages ₹3,50,872 and Data Science Trainee ₹3,67,366 a year, and Junior Data Scientist ₹6,54,932 (0 to 4 years). PayScale's under-1-year Data Scientist average is ₹5,95,255 in total compensation. AmbitionBox's 1 to 3 year band, ₹11.3 lakh to ₹12.5 lakh, is not a fresher figure.
Data scientist or CA: how do the two paths differ?
Chartered accountancy is a professional qualification: the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) awards it after its own examinations and a period of practical training. Data science has no licensing body; entry runs through a degree, statistics, programming and a portfolio, and most postings also ask for experience. Both reward comfort with numbers, and a commerce student who keeps mathematics or statistics can take either route. This page reports data scientist pay only, an AmbitionBox average of about ₹16.1 lakh a year at 1 to 8 years of experience, and makes no pay comparison with CAs. Choose by the work you want to do and the route you can commit to.
What is the difference between a data analyst and a data scientist?
A Data Analyst turns data into answers. A Data Scientist builds statistical and machine learning models that predict outcomes and test what drives them. The analyst's deliverable is an analysis, dashboard or report; the data scientist's is a validated model, experiment or forecast. Data scientists go deeper into statistics, experiment design and machine learning. AmbitionBox lists Data Analyst and Data Scientist as separate designations.
Should I become a data analyst before becoming a data scientist?
It is a common route, not a requirement. Data scientist postings in India mostly ask for experience: the median minimum in a 100-posting Naukri sample was 4 years. An analyst role builds SQL, visualization and metrics on the job, leaving statistics, experiments and machine learning to add, a suggested planning range of 6 to 12 months of part-time study.
Can I become a data scientist without a degree?
Few postings allow it. Of 19,525 Naukri 'data scientist' postings on October 6, 2026, 295 were tagged graduation not required, while 16,353 accepted any graduate. The tags do not show how often employers hire candidates without a degree. This page's guidance is a degree route, such as IIT Madras's online BS, or an analyst role and a strong project portfolio first.
Do I need a master's degree to become a data scientist?
Not to start, in the postings reviewed. Of 19,525 Naukri 'data scientist' postings on October 6, 2026, 16,353 were tagged any graduate and 12,734 any postgraduate; a posting can carry both tags. Some senior roles ask for more: Sigmoid's Associate Lead Data Scientist posting asks for a minimum master's degree, and Meesho's Principal Data Scientist posting prefers an M.Tech or PhD.
Does data science need coding?
Yes. Python and SQL top AmbitionBox's skills list for the title, and the Meesho, Sigmoid and Amazon India postings reviewed ask for Python, R or SQL. At entry level that means Python scripts with pandas and scikit-learn, SQL queries with joins and aggregations, and Git. If you prefer analysis with little code, data analyst roles lean more on SQL, spreadsheets and BI tools.
How much math and statistics do I need to become a data scientist?
Probability and statistics matter most, because hypothesis tests, A/B tests and model validation rest on them. Linear algebra explains how models represent data, and calculus how they are fitted. Meesho's Data Scientist III posting asks for a strong understanding of statistics and linear algebra. Applied work needs fluent statistics and a working grasp of the rest.
Is becoming a data scientist difficult?
It takes sustained work and the entry point is narrow. The suggested planning range for the first four roadmap stages is 39 to 62 weeks of part-time study, and only 794 of 19,525 Naukri 'data scientist' postings on October 6, 2026 accepted 0 years of experience. Many people start as data analysts and move across, which spreads the difficulty over a paid job.
Is data science a good career in India for the future?
Demand signals are positive but should be read carefully. Naukri JobSpeak reported 31% year-on-year growth in new AI/ML job listings in August 2026, against 14% for white-collar listings overall; that is a role family on one portal, not the Data Scientist title. On October 6, 2026, Naukri showed 19,525 'data scientist' postings, most asking for experience.
Should data scientists learn generative AI and LLM tools in 2026?
Yes, as an addition after core machine learning. In a 100-posting Naukri sample collected October 6, 2026, 20 titles named GenAI, generative AI, LLM, RAG or agentic AI. Using language models in analysis and as model features fits this role; building applications on them is more often the main focus of AI engineering roles, and employers draw that line differently.
Do data scientists need MLOps and model deployment skills?
Some, but not first. Version control, reproducible code and an understanding of how a model is served and monitored help you hand work to engineers. Production ownership varies by team: some data scientists deploy and operate their models, others hand them to machine learning or platform engineers. This roadmap places production skills in stage 5, after your first data science role.
Is a data analytics certificate enough to become a data scientist?
No. An analytics certificate covers the foundation: SQL, Python, BI tools and an introduction to machine learning. The role also needs experiment design, machine learning depth and a portfolio of validated models. The three Simplilearn programs on this page are analytics programs that cover the foundation stages, not the full data scientist roadmap.
How many projects should a data scientist portfolio have?
We found no measured number. This page's editorial guidance is depth over count: a few complete projects, each with a business question, a validated method, documented code and a recommendation, such as the retention analysis set out under portfolio projects. That is guidance, not a hiring requirement.

How this page was produced
This page was researched and drafted with the help of AI tools. Every figure on it traces to a named source recorded in the page's research files, and each source is listed with the date it was checked in the table above. Where the evidence was missing or could not be read, the page says so rather than estimating. The reviewers named on this page checked it after it was built, including its title, description, image descriptions and structured data as well as the body text.
Limitations
- No government figure. We found no Indian government source publishing pay, employment or vacancies for the Data Scientist title in the sources reviewed, and no NCO-2015 code for the title was confirmed. Every figure is from a private platform, job board or employer.
- Salary sources measure different things. Employee-reported pay, advertised pay and total compensation are shown separately and never combined. Most Indian platforms do not say whether a figure is CTC or fixed pay.
- AmbitionBox's displayed ranges are narrow. They sit around each group's average, so they are not the range most people earn; the national percentile spread is the better guide.
- The posting sample is one day and one board. The 100 Naukri postings are the first results by relevance on October 6, 2026, not a random sample; 84 list Bengaluru and large IT services employers recur. Only 16 disclose pay.
- Listing counts are snapshots. Naukri, foundit and LinkedIn counts are single-day keyword matches, overlap with one another and include hybrid titles.
- Skills were not counted. Skill frequencies across postings were not measured, so skills are described from individual postings and platform lists.
- The growth signal is broader than the title. Naukri JobSpeak's figure covers the AI/ML role family on one portal, and measures listings, not hires.
- Timelines are planning ranges. They are built from course lengths at about 10 hours a week and from Indian education frameworks. The non-technical range is an editorial estimate, and no figure is given for the job search or for an internal move from an analyst role.
- Not published. Data Scientist pay beyond 9 years, any 0-year figure, pay in Kolkata and smaller cities, pay by named company, a salary premium for any skill, AmbitionBox's narrow displayed 'typical range', Glassdoor's FAQ average (it conflicts with the same page's visible base pay), Indeed's title ladder, Levels.fyi and Indeed city figures, PayScale's later career stages (published only as percentages) and salary figures on Simplilearn's own course pages. We found no reliable exact-title source for these in the sources reviewed.
- Dated snapshots. Figures are as captured on the dates shown; the Levels.fyi figures are as captured October 6, 2026, and the live page changes as submissions arrive.
- No cross-role salary comparison is made, including with chartered accountants.
- Guidance is labeled. The learning, portfolio and interview suggestions are an editorial framework, and every timeline is a suggested planning range with its assumptions stated.
- The programs are analytics programs. None of the Simplilearn programs on this page is a data science program, and none covers the full roadmap.
