My Background

I have two decades of production-related experience. I spent the last 15 years working as a press operator at Pactiv Evergreen. The company manufactures and produces boxes and packaging materials for prominent restaurants and fast-food franchises.

I led the union in the largest plant in Pactiv Evergreen’s Paper Division. I looked after the production machinery’s functions. The plant has over 300 employees during the slow season, rising close to 400 during peak demand times. It’s a 24/7, year-round operation with products covering food packaging items such as paper cups, plastic lids, and food service containers and cartons.

Then Came the Realization

After over a decade of working with great people in a secure position, I eventually realized that my career goals weren’t aligned with the organization’s goals. My position entailed me working with the corporate union, but I wanted something different and something more. I wanted to get into project management.

But to make my dreams of a new career in project management come true, I needed to upskill.

In Search of Knowledge

I believe that the suitable courses, especially in the areas of project management and Lean management, would help boost my resume and help me land a new job. I felt confident because the discipline of project management is everywhere.

I have almost a decade of experience working in an enterprise environment designing, planning, implementing, and scaling high-quality solutions that run on Azure and AWS Cloud Services. I have worked with numerous organizations, notably as a system administrator, cloud engineer, and database engineer.

One of my most valued work experiences was with the U.S. Army as an operations manager, and I consider it one of the most significant periods of my professional journey.

While working as a cloud engineer at EyeQ Monitoring, I realized the potential in DevOps and wanted to explore that as a career opportunity. I consider myself a professionally versatile American with more than 20 years of work experience. For example, I have worked in financial services, telecommunications, construction, aerospace, defense, IT, automotive, and power generation. While working for giant manufacturing companies such as Ford and Mitsubishi, I realized that the manufacturing sector was shrinking, and I decided to change my career path to focus on IT. To gain the required skills, I enrolled in Simplilearn’s ITIL® 4 Foundation Certification Training Course, Certified Scrum Master, and SAFe® Agilist certification training courses.

I’m an American project manager with more than 15 years of experience working as a transformational project engineer for Koch Industries. Losing my job in 2020 allowed me to consider and redirect my career. Sure, the pandemic was a factor, but there were personal reasons for leaving as well. While working as a research and development chemical engineer with Sugaright, I realized I lacked certain skills that would be useful in my field, namely Lean Six Sigma, which is used extensively in production, research, and innovation.

I am skilled as a multilingual chemist with professional experience with palm oil biofuels and liquid sugar. I have a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and chemistry from the University of Minnesota. After departing Sugaright in August 2020, I enrolled in Simplilearn’s Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Course. The course teaches project leadership techniques and how to interpret data using risk management, process mapping, and benchmark setting. 

My experience was amazing. After receiving my certification from Simplilearn in Lean Management, I was awarded a new job with a major cosmetics company in January 2021, with a 20 percent salary increase. I have also been able to solve problems at work with the help of the skills I acquired during my course. Specifically, because so many products are coming in, we had issues with space management. I learned the 5s methodology during the course, based on a Japanese method of organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. I applied 5s to our product space problem and managed the whole process. 

Seeking larger opportunities

I realized I needed to upskill while working as a processing engineer at Sugaright. I wanted to learn Lean Six Sigma , which is very useful and has become necessary to prosper in my field. It is something that we chemical engineers use for quality control and management. I wanted a Lean Six Sigma certification on my resume since I was also looking for a better position in a larger city. My previous job was in Philadelphia, but New York is a hub of opportunities, and I wanted to shift my focus there. Once I left my job at Sugaright, I had time to upskill.
