The thought of upskilling and learning about the latest trends in the field of cybersecurity led me to pursue the Advanced Executive Program In Cybersecurity from Simplilearn, and I successfully improved my performance in the present job role!

My Career Journey So Far

Out of college with a B.Tech, I gained 12+ years of working experience by engaging with big MNCs like TCS, Wipro, and Saint Gobain Group in the cybersecurity domain. Presently I am working as a Technical Consultant at HCL Technologies and hope to find better job opportunities and an increased salary by applying all I learned through the Cybersecurity program from Simplilearn.

The Challenge

After working in the IT & Cyber Security domain for more than 12 years, I realized that I have some gaps in my knowledge with the growing technologies and tools in the field. I came across the Advanced Executive Program in Cybersecurity course from Simplilearn and thought of obtaining a professional certification. So, I took the course and decided to upskill myself to grow professionally and improve my performance in my current role.

As an engineering enthusiast, I have long experience in engineering and management, leadership and mentoring, and IT systems testing and problem-solving in Bosch Automotive Electronics India Pvt. Ltd. Employed as an Assistant Manager; I found the scope to grow further by upgrading my knowledge and skills. To upskill with a highly professional and friendly team became the best decision of my life.

The Journey

As an engineer at heart and mind, I have extensive experience in engineering and management. I am a self-motivated professional, capable of working independently or as part of a team. I’ve worked with Bosch Automotive Electronics India Private Limited for the past nine years. In the IT department, I majorly focused on manufacturing IT technology. I dealt with many machines and devices and realized that cyber security had become a prerequisite to thriving in today’s vulnerable online environment. So I decided to upskill myself and improve my understanding of cybersecurity.

The Challenge

Based in the IT sector, I became familiar with the significance of cyber security for my organization and job role. Therefore, to improve my performance in my current role, prepare myself better for an additional role and its responsibilities in the IT department, and contribute better to the company, I decided to upskill.

Owing to my busy schedule, I wanted the teaching to be at my pace. Keeping up with my feasible time was a prerequisite while selecting the course.

Simplilearn Solution

I scouted a lot to find the right course for me. When my mentor advised me to learn online and upskill myself, I needed clarification about the quality I would get. But upon researching various platforms, Simplilearn stood out.

The platform is a very simple tool for learning complicated subjects. It is very logically and sensibly designed. I took the small courses for beginners and then proceeded with post-graduate programs and higher certifications. Also, when I took up ITIL4 Foundation Course, I could correlate everything I learnt to my work. The blended learning approach helped me learn anytime, combining self-learning with live class interaction, and I felt very flexible with my work commitments. I did most of my courses while traveling for work on weekdays in a cab and others on weekends.

The journey with Simplilearn was motivating, and I thoroughly enjoyed all the sessions. It encouraged me to keep coming back and learning more with Simplilearn.

The Simplilearn customer care is exceptionally dedicated. The support and teaching staff was very supportive and helpful. Last but not the least, the wide array of courses it offers is impressive. The payment modes and Simplilearn refund policy are very easy and convenient. It is an all-in-one package with an amazing learning experience, great management staff, and an exceptional teaching and support team.

My career began as a field service technician with Telkom, the leading wireline and wireless telecommunications provider in South Africa. I earned my degree in electrical engineering, so working with ADSL, routers and switches, and other configurations needed in telecom was a natural fit. However, after a few years, I realized that there weren’t enough opportunities for growth in the field. I started working within other organizations and realized that hacking is a huge problem for businesses and that there was a demand for professionals who know how to make our systems more secure.

I began learning more about IT networks and cyber security using free courses through SkillUp by Simplilearn. From there, I decided to pursue training to help me enter the cyber security field. Simplilearn’s Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certification, felt like the right next step because it’s globally recognized and is an audit professional certification sponsored by the reputed Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).

I’ve had the opportunity to explore a wide variety of professional roles. I’m 61 years old and have been practicing martial arts for the past 40 years. In addition to being inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Eastern United States International Martial Arts Association for a lifetime service of over 30 years, I still teach martial arts twice a week. I also worked as a DJ for a short period of time.

Having worked for over 20 years for Xerox Corporation in different technical and training positions, I found myself wanting to update my understanding of the emerging Public cloud landscape. I chose Simplilearn’s Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Cyber Security because of its comprehensive curriculum, and its coursework offering from the prestigious MIT Schwarzman College of Computing. Also, as a working professional during the pandemic, I looked specifically for the option to complete classes virtually.

After the course, I successfully passed my Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) exams on the first attempt.

Success Starts with a Decision

I believe in living a fulfilling life, and I’ve never shied away from learning new things. The path to my current career in cyber security is a result of key decisions to continuously update my skills based on my interests. My time working as a DJ led to an interest in electronic stereo systems and how they function. From there, I became interested in the IT sector and I eventually shifted to the software industry.

As I transitioned from a 20-year corporate career at Xerox, I began a journey to update my understanding of the emerging Public cloud landscape, specifically the tools and techniques used to implement and manage applications and solutions in that space. On the way, I naturally developed an understanding of the security needs and decided to focus my studies to understand more about the cyber security aspect of the cloud landscape.

I also realized that to perform better in the cyber security domain, I needed to clear the CISSP® and the (ISC)²® CCSP certifications. So, in 2020, I chose to upskill myself by enrolling in Simplilearn’s program with modules from MIT’s Schwarzman College of Computing.

The thirst for knowledge is endless and for as long as I can remember I have loved learning. My friends have given me the nickname of a ‘serial learner’ because of my love for learning. I love picking up new skills or even going back to school to expand my knowledge.

I have worked with India’s top IT and software firms have garnered a decent amount of experience on topics as cloud security, DevOps, cryptography, and IT infrastructure.

I am currently working as a CIO for StopSpoof, a company that provides security against phishing emails, and I also serve on the Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) board of directors. I’ve also held positions with three Indian state governments, work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (US), and even worked with the international consulting firm KPMG.

While I’m meeting my professional goals, there is still so much that I don’t know and have yet to learn. It is the key to staying relevant in the ever-changing world of technology, and the ongoing arms race of IT and computer security in particular. Simplilearn has definitely helped contribute to my growing love for learning.

The Challenge: Staying Ahead of the Curve

I did my undergrad degree in physics from the University of Mumbai, then pursued a degree in business management and IT from the Indian Institute of Business Management and Studies, I then completed my MBA in information technology. With my thirst for knowledge growing, I turned to getting post-graduate certifications and training sessions, spanning a wide range of technologies and project management methodologies.

My next goal was in the field of cybersecurity, where I was looking for a comprehensive program to help me not only get started but also provides a 360-degree view of security to understand the motivations and methods of hackers better and learn the best practices for protecting IT and computer assets.

My thought process for this was, if I am in cybersecurity, should I be more in the offensive red team, or should I be in the blue team which is defensive? If I know both, I am a grandmaster. This cemented my goal to becoming a grandmaster.

I knew that I needed a learning partner that would cater to my specific needs and I did extensive research before choosing Simplilearn because of their course offered better values than other providers. I quickly joined Simplilearn’s Cyber Security Expert Master’s Course.

The Simplilearn Solution: Closing Knowledge Gaps

The Cyber Security Expert Master’s Course covers a lot of ground, including Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) training and Certified Ethical Hacking (CEH) training. Since I wanted to become a grandmaster, I knew I would need to dive as deep as possible into cybersecurity, hoping to better understand the difference between preventive and reactive in the context of cybersecurity.

These courses helped me to understand why a certain model is reactive and why something else is preventive. My job requires me to stay updated with the latest technology, and with these courses, it eases decision-making and clarifies why we are choosing a particular option over another.

In fact, a lot of the material was a review of what I’d learned earlier; but I fell in love with the way the trainers at Simplilearn explained things. They were able to put all the pieces together in a way that created “aha” moments. I also appreciated how up-to-date the training was, and Simplilearn’s trainers did a great job explaining how these technologies have evolved over the years and months.

The Results: Better Equipped for a High-Profile Cyber Security Career

The training helped me in my leadership role, empowering me to make better decisions backed by data. In addition to CCSP and CEH certifications, the Simplilearn master’s course also prepared me for the Certification Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certifications.

I envision a future where many of these cybersecurity tasks are automated, where professionals will need to learn about big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. I believe that the next big challenge for cybersecurity is a focus on securing the various elements of the “internet of things” (IoT).
