Sometimes, you can get yourself a full education in a particular field, only to find that it doesn’t quite align with the current job market. Demands for different professionals fluctuate, and things like economic downturns, advances that replace existing technologies, and even global pandemics can alter the job landscape at any moment. We live in an increasingly tech-dependent world, and it was that realization that motivated me to enroll in Simplilearn’s Data Scientist Master’s program to better my career prospects.

But before we get into how I became upskilled in the data science field, let me tell you where I started from.

A Little Information About Me

I’ve lived all my life in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, and completed my undergrad studies in Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in 2018. I followed this up with a postgraduate study in Mathematics in 2020, at the same university.

My Challenge: Upskilling with Tech-Based Knowledge

Upon completing my post-grad studies in 2020, I discovered that COVID-19 had brought about a scarcity in the job market involving statistics and mathematics. It was very difficult for me to get a job in my specialty fields, so I concluded that my best course of action was to upskill myself.

I felt that upskilling would improve me in such a way that my previous domain knowledge would give me an extra edge, and also ease my transition into a different domain. Bear in mind, that I was approaching this effort from a completely non-technical background, which as you can imagine, added another layer of complexity to my plan. I needed to find a way to not only upskill but also overcome my lack of a technical background. Lucky for me, I found Simplilearn.

How Simplilearn Helped Me Attain My Goal

I signed up for Simplilearn’s Data Scientist Master’s program with the expectations of a solid upskilling experience. The Journey

A Bangalorean by birth, I did my graduation in Mechanical engineering from Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Bangalore, in 2010. I did my post-graduation from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Bidar, in Computer Integrated manufacturing in 2013. After my studies, I worked in small companies before finding my passion for teaching. I worked as an Assistant Professor in G.H. Raisoni Society, College of Engineering and Management, Pune for around 8 years.

Realizing that my growth had become stunted and teaching no longer excited me, I decided to completely change my career. I have also always been passionate about technology and software-related things. The rapid change in technology made me feel that this is the right time for me to update my knowledge. So, I decided to enroll myself in Simplilearn’s Data Scientist Master’s Program to upskill.

For as long as I can recall, I have wanted to be a program director. Taking action is the difference between just dreaming of a new career and achieving it. I got educated, improved my skill set, and put myself in a position to achieve my career goals. Plus, I did it without moving or switching companies.

I live in Fiji and have worked in telecommunications since 2000. After earning a diploma in electrical and electronics engineering from the Fiji Institute of Technology, I began working for Vodafone as a telecommunications and prepay billing technician. I soon was elevated to a senior prepay billing engineer and then to prepay billing and VAS manager. In this role, I managed billing domains and transformational network projects through the evolution from 2G to 3G and then to 4G/LTE. 

In 2016, I earned an MBA from the University of the South Pacific. While our company prepared for the evolution of 5G in the Pacific Islands Market, I decided to pursue my long-term vision of becoming a project director. This pursuit led me to Simplilearn’s PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner Certification Training course, where I learned about project organization, planning, and control. After completing the online course, I obtained a promotion with a 25 percent salary hike. 

Today I am responsible for Vodafone’s overall program management and building group synergies in all ATH regional markets, including Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Samoa, American Samoa, Cook Islands, and Papua New Guinea.

Using Change to Your Advantage

With all the technological changes, I saw significant growth in my field. I wanted to develop additional skills and envisioned how a project management certification would help me achieve my long-term goals. My Simplilearn certification helped me obtain my current position as Vodafone’s regional program manager.

My career began as a field service technician with Telkom, the leading wireline and wireless telecommunications provider in South Africa. I earned my degree in electrical engineering, so working with ADSL, routers and switches, and other configurations needed in telecom was a natural fit. I began my career as a mechanical engineer. A native of Mumbai, I graduated from GV Acharya College in 2018 with a degree in mechanical engineering. From there, I immediately found a position in a mechanical company in the design and production line. The company was in a small industry with few growth opportunities, and my role required that I work on-site and interact with work crews on the site. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the position was not a good fit for me. After three months, I decided to leave that job and started teaching as a physics professor.
