I’m a higher education business professional working as a cyber security admin manager at The Georgia Institute of Technology. I have worked in IT for more than a decade now. When I decided to look for new job opportunities, I first enrolled in Simplilearn’s Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate AZ-104. My name is Swapnil Pal, and I am a systems engineer, and hold a Bachelor of Technology (B-tech) degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering. Prior to this position, I worked with India-based company, VOIS, as a senior quality assurance executive. The position was the result of a campus placement.

I decided to upskill because I wanted to change my career path from software tester to software developer. Since I was also curious about web development, I started learning on my own. Still, I knew that it wasn’t enough, so I began searching for online courses. I eventually discovered Simplilearn’s Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Full Stack Web Development, provided by Simplilearn. So, in 2021, I decided to upskill myself.

After three phases of the course (covering core Java, advanced Java, and spring framework) I was confident enough to switch my role from being a tester to a developer. In March 2022, I switched my job to TCS as a Java developer and now I am working there as a systems engineer. I switched my job with a 20 percent salary increase. Now that I’ve completed the course, I’m expecting some more in my cost to company.

The Journey

I graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology from Osmania University, Hyderabad, in 2008. Right out of college, I got the fantastic opportunity to join Capgemini as an Associate Consultant. After 3 years of working with Capgemini, I got the chance to work with Syndicate Bank as a Probationary Assistant Manager for a year. Deciding on further studies, I did an Executive MBA in Entrepreneurship/Entrepreneurial Studies from CEA, Hungary. Post-MBA, I started working with Randstad as a Consultant on deputation to JPMC. 

Two years into my dream career, I met with an accident that required me to quit my job and focus on my health. This resulted in a 2 year gap in my resume, and I felt like I had lost touch with the current technology market. This is why I chose to upskill to stay updated with the latest technology and trends.

Sometimes, you can get yourself a full education in a particular field, only to find that it doesn’t quite align with the current job market. Demands for different professionals fluctuate, and things like economic downturns, advances that replace existing technologies, and even global pandemics can alter the job landscape at any moment. We live in an increasingly tech-dependent world, and it was that realization that motivated me to enroll in Simplilearn’s Data Scientist Master’s program to better my career prospects.

But before we get into how I became upskilled in the data science field, let me tell you where I started from.

A Little Information About Me

I’ve lived all my life in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, and completed my undergrad studies in Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in 2018. I followed this up with a postgraduate study in Mathematics in 2020, at the same university.

My Challenge: Upskilling with Tech-Based Knowledge

Upon completing my post-grad studies in 2020, I discovered that COVID-19 had brought about a scarcity in the job market involving statistics and mathematics. It was very difficult for me to get a job in my specialty fields, so I concluded that my best course of action was to upskill myself.

I felt that upskilling would improve me in such a way that my previous domain knowledge would give me an extra edge, and also ease my transition into a different domain. Bear in mind, that I was approaching this effort from a completely non-technical background, which as you can imagine, added another layer of complexity to my plan. I needed to find a way to not only upskill but also overcome my lack of a technical background. Lucky for me, I found Simplilearn.

How Simplilearn Helped Me Attain My Goal
