I live in Pune, Maharashtra, with my family. After 11 years+ of working as an Assistant Professor in an Engineering college, I felt my career was stagnating. I wanted to move from teaching to the corporate field. Friends and colleagues cautioned me to not be too ambitious, but I was interested in Data Science. I knew I had to upskill and started looking for Data Science courses online.

In January 2020, I decided to leave my teaching job and enroll in Simplilearn’s Data Scientist Master’s Program. For me having clear career goals has always been important. It helps me understand what I need to aim for and how my journey is going to start. I always found Analytics fascinating, things you can do with data is amazing. My journey isn’t a traditional one at all.

While working at Accenture, I wanted to try for a role in analytics, but I didn’t have the heart to pursue my dreams because I didn’t have the necessary background. My amazing managers at my company encouraged me to take courses and acquire new marketable skills.

After extensive research and comparing different learning options, I found Simplilearn which offered courses that were more comprehensive, had a great variety of offerings and had an easier learning path. Plus, Simplilearn also offered the online flexibility I needed for his current work schedule.

So, I took the leap towards my new career goals and enrolled in Simplilearn’s Business Analyst Certification online course. While other Simplilearn courses were also enticing, such as data science with R, Python, and SAS, I decided it would be better to get started with the Business Analytics Expert course first.

The course was truly magnificent. The content, study material, and the videos are outstanding. If someone wants to get into analytics, this is a great course to take and acquire the required skills. I would definitely recommend this course and Simplilearn.

I have 26 years of experience with market-leading multinational organisations where I played diverse, successful roles in sales, distribution, marketing, product development, and customer experience. I am a Mechanical Engineer and received my MBA (PGDM) from IIM Calcutta in 1994. After various senior managerial roles in global marketing at Philips Health Systems, Gillette, and Ranbaxy, I wanted to start my own med-tech company and website. 

Since the market was changing rapidly and going through a digital transformation, I needed to ensure I was up-to-date with current trends. I felt it was the right time to upskill in digital marketing. I enrolled in Simplilearn’s Digital Marketing Program to get acquainted with current practices in the field.

I found Simplilearn through social media and liked that their approach included both classroom and online instruction. I felt it was important to have the opportunity to learn in a classroom setting. The courses available on YouTube were in bits and pieces without a proper structure. Simplilearn’s learning consultant walked me through the entire curriculum and helped me make the decision to enrol. 

The content in the classroom setting as well as in the LMS was very rich. The lessons were very engaging. Simplilearn’s instructors were very knowledgeable and taught with real-life examples, which helped me understand the concepts. The six-month program format also worked well for me. I took weekend classes and did self-study during my breaks from work. Class recordings were conveniently posted in the LMS and accessible at any time. They were very helpful in reviewing topics.

A lot of people dream about being able to start their own business, I am also one of these people. My career goal was set from day one, I always wanted to start my own IT consultancy firm in my homeland. My entire journey was to fulfill this ultimate goal.

I have always been the man with a plan. With over 23 years in the IT industry, I knew that staying abreast of the industry’s developments is key to advancing my career toward my goal.

Finding New Opportunities

I moved to Saudi Arabia from Pakistan in 2003, searching for better job opportunities. I started my career as a consultant and moved to project management and IT service management. Currently, I am working at a public company that provides infrastructure and software as a service to other ministries.

Every ministry has its own setup and IT department. The Saudi Government is planning to centralize the IT services across the ministries. I am currently working for the central entity as a part of ITSM. They are currently using ITIL v2, and my job here is to upgrade the systems to ITIL v3 and later to v4.

Gaining Marketable Skills With Simplilearn

My skills are highly valued because there are very few ITIL 4 professionals in the market where I’m from. However, this also means that I must constantly keep my skills updated to include new and improved technologies. That’s why I have been taking online courses to keep upskilling.

Simplilearn has been a big part of that journey because it has been my go-to for upskilling. I started with one course and fell in love with it. To date, I have completed 16 professional certifications through Simplilearn online bootcamps and recently completed ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition Module Training and MSP® Foundation & Practitioner Certification Training. After receiving my ITIL 4 certificate, I even got a new job at a public company in January 2021, along with a 15% salary hike.

Simplilearn allowed me to have choices in where I wanted to work. Not only am I ITIL v4 certified, but have also cleared the MSP Foundation exam and am currently preparing for the MSP Practitioner certification.

I am maintaining a pace of earning one certificate per year. I realized very early that in the IT field, I need to upskill. Otherwise, I will be left behind. In the next five years, I want to move back to my hometown in Pakistan and start my own IT consultancy firm. I am sure these certificates will help me in achieving my goals.

Sometimes life throws unexpected obstacles in your way. One moment, things are going great, and you see your future laid out in front of you, the next, things come to a grinding halt, and you never saw it coming. But although those obstacles can hinder your progress and plans for life, we can rise above the setbacks and get our future back on track.

Although enthusiasm, drive, and excitement can help you overcome life’s unexpected complications, sometimes you need a little extra help. In my case, that help came from Simplilearn and its Data Science Master’s Program.

But first, a little background.

My Background

I hail from Nagpur, Maharashtra. I completed my Bachelors in Engineering from KDK College of Engineering in 2017 and got placed in M Junction Services Ltd. as an Associate. While there, I completed several projects and worked for a client, Steel Authority of India, Chandrapur. While working at M Junction, I got an opportunity to learn various languages. Everything seemed to be falling into place.

However, in early 2020, things went off the road when I went in for surgery. Although the surgery was successful, the doctor advised me not to work, so I had to leave my job.

But even my necessary departure from the workforce couldn’t diminish my enthusiasm, desire for knowledge, dedication, and ability to learn things quickly. I still wanted to learn new things, be it technological innovations or new languages. And I still had my hobbies and interests, things like cooking and dancing.

The Challenge: Upskilling After a Health-Related Absence from the IT Industry

Although my career plans had stalled, technology and innovation march on. The last thing I wanted to do was to fall behind. And the problem is, in the fast-paced, ever-growing IT world, one or two years is like an eternity.

I decided I needed to take some online courses and get myself upskilled and stay current. However, there was a dizzying number of online educational choices. Fortunately, I had friends who had taken the Data Science course from Simplilearn and were pleased with the results. There’s nothing like positive word of mouth to convince you!

I received a B. Tech in Computer Science and Engineering at BML Munjal University. I didn’t get the placement I wanted, so I started working in my family’s business. But I always wanted to be in the corporate IT field. I wanted to justify my degree and put it to work.
