The Most In-Demand Marketing Skill

Digital marketing is the top in-demand skill in the marketing industry, according to a 2022 LinkedIn report.

In fact, across North America, Europe and Middle East, and Asia markets, digital marketing is currently one of the most sought-after skills among marketing professionals.

It’s likely the growing importance of online marketing is pandemic-driven, yet it shows no signs of slowing down as we transition to a post-pandemic world. For this reason, businesses will continue to support – and even expand – services born from the lockdowns and restrictions, those which consumers prefer over previous ways of doing business.

Remote Work Opportunities

For many digital marketers, a critical piece of the job market is the option to work remotely. Fortunately, the media and communications industry (which includes online marketing) leads the way in remote work opportunities along with software/IT and health/wellness:

Compared to a year earlier, remote jobs in media and communications rose from 12.5 percent to 21.3 percent — a favorable outlook for the digital marketing job market.

Interestingly, marketing departments in North America seem to embrace remote positions more than in the EMEA or APAC regions, according to the LinkedIn report:

Average Compensation in the Digital Marketing Job Market

While there are a variety of careers available in digital marketing, not all of them offer similar compensation. Here’s a sample of average U.S. salaries for some of the top jobs in this category:

The wide range of salaries is, of course, dependent on the location of the job and its associated cost of living and average salaries. Some employees may consider a lower compensation if there is an option to work remotely.

The gender pay gap in the marketing industry is an interesting one. For most roles, women are still underpaid compared to men in the same roles — except for those in senior executive positions, where women are compensated more than men in those same jobs. Women are also paid slightly higher than men in junior manager and manager/team manager careers.

The Demand for Digital Marketers

According to LinkedIn, there are upwards of 860,000 job openings for digital marketing – among the top 10 in-demand jobs. Social media, content strategy, SEO, and analytics are the most requested experience levels when applying for these jobs.

This is compounded by the current digital skills gap, an industry-wide problem resulting in a shortage of about 230,000 digital marketing professionals in the U.S.
