Having a child will change your career in more ways than one. Not only is there the time missed from taking maternity or paternity leave, but industry or technology changes can also put your career behind the curve. Thankfully, I found that Simplilearn’s online bootcamp gave me the tools and education to put my career back on a winning trajectory. 

My name is Radhika Joshi from Madhya Pradesh in Central India. I earned solid education credentials, including a Masters in Computer Applications (MCA). After gaining nearly two years of experience working in computer applications, I married in 2017. I shifted to Mumbai and then to Pune to live with my husband.

A year later, I got pregnant and had to leave my job at JMR Infotech. I couldn’t return to work after the delivery because our child was born prematurely. My leave led to a career gap of 3.5 years. When I finally decided to restart my career, once things at home started to settle, I discovered that the industry had transformed. I no longer had the skills needed to compete at the same level. I studied in the evening on weekdays, and on weekends, I studied in the morning.

I secured a job with TCS with a 50% salary hike, and I received the designation of C1- Software Engineer — a nice increase in title that reflected my new talents. During my interview at TCS, they asked me questions about Spring Boot framework — an open-source, microservice-based Java web framework. I explained it very well during the interview using my experience in Simplilearn’s course and our capstone project.

When I started applying for the jobs, I realized that there were a lot of changes in my sector. Whereas I had worked with Java only, other industry professionals had moved on to using frameworks, DevOps, and Angular Front End.

I’m a senior research scientist with over a decade of experience. I earned a master’s degree with a specialization in microbiology in 2004. I started my career at a clinical stage biotech company, Aurigene Discovery, and then spent 10 years at Syngene. I then returned to Aurigene as a program manager.

Expanding My Horizons

I decided to upskill because I felt that I needed an upgrade. I started with Simplilearn’s PMP® certification and then went on to complete multiple other courses. While upskilling in project management was in alignment with my role as a senior scientist, I realized that all of my current reading was only related to the scientific field. I decided to expand my knowledge base by upskilling in the area of digital marketing with Simplilearn’s Digital Marketing 101 course. Learning the fundamental concepts of digital marketing, along with marketing for mobile and marketing analytics, provided an introduction to a field completely outside of my own. From there, I continued my upskilling journey by completing the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course.

Adding a learning plan into an already busy personal and professional life requires a strategy. Simplilearn’s self-paced course model gave me the freedom to choose when and where I completed the courses. While I did not work from home for long during the 2020 lockdowns, I was able to fit upskilling into my days. Since I had a morning shift, I would have time in the afternoon to go through the course material and videos. 

I credit the flexible learning formats for helping me balance learning with home and work, even with a full-time job, family, and simultaneously completing an MBA program. While cooking or doing other household chores, I’d play the videos on the side and simultaneously go about my day while upskilling. The content design was great because all the videos were self-explanatory. The information came across so understandably that it actually allowed me to do something else while still listening and learning.

My career mantra is to always keep looking up and keep moving forward. I am constantly looking at how I can improve myself and how I can attain my next career goal. This is exactly how when I was faced with the opportunity of becoming a Scrum Master, I took it and haven’t looked back since. Here’s my journey of how I became a Scrum Master.

I have worked my way up ever since I began my professional career, starting as an SAP trainee with SoftSpin Services in Mumbai nearly 20 years ago. Learning on the job came naturally to me. I always make a conscious effort to learn something of value from everyone I encounter—not just at work, but in daily life. This spirit of lifelong learning is exactly how I came into contact with Simplilearn.

I believe a lot can be learned just by doing it in your regular course of work, but sometimes it’s necessary to take a more structured approach to learn, especially when it involves a standardized methodology such as Agile Scrum. For an agile organization to run like a well-oiled machine, you can’t simply wing it. Everyone needs to be on the same page to reap its many benefits.

That is why Simplilearn was the answer to all my problems. A two-day Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM) Certification training course gave me the confidence to excel in my career and that was just the beginning. 

The Challenge: Taking On the Role of ScrumMaster

With my mantra in mind, I have advanced through the ranks as a professional software engineer to become a program manager since graduating in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. I worked with SAP software (and the ABAP programming language specifically) at SoftSpin for a couple of years before moving on to a series of senior-level software engineer and management-level jobs. 

I joined Mercedes-Benz R&D India as a Program Manager for the Service Operation team. My work focused on SAP and financial services, which was my forte, but my manager knew I wanted to keep growing and taking on more ambitious roles. She asked me whether I wanted to take on the role of ScrumMaster. 

ScrumMasters have a lot of responsibility. They coordinate the various activities comprising a given project with business objectives (bringing a new software release to market, for example), ensuring the project is done right and delivered on time. They host meetings and maintain multiple lines of communication to make sure everyone has the information and resources they need—when they need it. It’s similar to the role of a movie director, although it’s typically applied to technology projects that involve large, multidisciplinary teams.

I was awed by my manager’s confidence in me but I was a little skeptical about making the transition right away, as I only knew the basics of the Agile methodology. So, I decided that the best option for me was to pursue formal certification as a ScrumMaster. After extensive research and multiple recommendations, I found Simplilearn. They had exactly what I had been looking for to help me become a ScrumMaster.

When you work in a particular industry over a period of time, you get specialized in that field. For me, it was application platforms, but working at a product company and overhearing coworkers talk about Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT), I got curious. Yes, I specialized in my field, but I was eager to learn and do more.

I was really interested in how you capture data, analyze it, and use it to make better decisions. It was a lot of buzz back then, four years ago. That’s what inspired me — that it was an emerging trend. I was ready for something different, and I knew that to move into that area, I’d have to invest in myself and get a professional certification. I knew that the certification would also help me to be confident in my knowledge. I wanted to make sure I got my training from a good training provider and hence, chose Simplilearn.

Studying Data Science on My Own

I learned about Simplilearn from one of my managers. I did the online ITIL® Foundation course because my employer required it, but while browsing through other courses, I found data science. At that time, I wanted to learn more about it, so I actually enrolled for that one, as well. I was engaged enough with the material to get through the course quickly. I did it in about eight weeks, spending two to three hours every day.

I took the Data Scientist course in 2015. I’m currently working on the supply chain planning side; the planning stage involves a lot of data analysis and forecasting and predictive analysis. And now I understand the concept of the software. This learning has helped me get a broader understanding of how to analyze data to make sense of it and predict how data will behave in the future. It gave me a very good understanding as to how you plan things and how the algorithm works, and how the regression modeling and other statistical modeling work.

I liked the structure of the course because it starts with how you analyze data, generate data models and how you forecast using these models. Besides, you have three different tools to learn: R, SAS, and Excel. The course teaches, in detail, how to use R and SAS software, and how to use them within Excel. I received step-by-step instruction as to how I could perform things and what I have to be looking for, and what the additional options are that I have within each software. R has also become something you must know if you want to be a data analyst. I use it in daily work.

For me, however, learning business analytics with Excel was the most important because everyone, and every organization, uses it. Even the planning tool that we use is Excel on the front end and SAP on the back end. 

Learning how to use Excel for data analytics was very helpful for me. I never knew there was an option for enabling a data analytics tab and then you can do many other things rather than just adding and subtracting in Excel. I use it daily to calculate a regression model or confidence interval. I just go into the data analytics tab then get my data and then I can actually tell you how you could build a model based on the tables. 

In addition to the quality of the course material and the knowledge I gained, I appreciated the customer support I got with Simplilearn. The customer support was really helpful when I had issues. I also received good feedback on my assignments and advice for improvement, which I found very supportive and very accommodating. Cost wise, it’s very reasonable and you get good value for your money.
