    The exam tests three domains. Each maps to a set of skills:

  • Is PMP certification worth it?

    For most people with three or more years of project leadership, yes. PMI's 14th salary survey shows PMP holders earn a 17% higher median salary globally, and 24% higher in the US ($135,000 median). In India, PMP holders reported a median about 33% above non-certified peers. The benefit also grows over time: US holders certified for 10+ years reported a $173,000 median.   • Is PMP certification worth it in 2027?

    Yes, and arguably more than before. PMI rebuilt the exam in July 2026 so it now tests AI in project management, sustainability, governance and business value. That means a PMP earned in 2027 reflects how projects are run today, not an older syllabus. Demand for people who can connect projects to business outcomes keeps rising, and PMP remains the credential employers use to screen for it. One practical note: from 1 December 2026, live instructor-led training only counts toward the 35-hour requirement if it comes from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, so choose your course provider carefully.

  • What is the PMI audit process for a PMP application?

    PMI randomly selects a share of applications for audit to confirm that what you wrote is accurate. If you're selected, PMI tells you right after you submit, and you have 90 days to send:

    • Copies of your degree or diploma

    • Your 35-hour training certificate (or proof of active CAPM)

    • Signed confirmation from a supervisor or manager for each project you listed

    Once PMI has everything, the review usually takes about 5–7 business days. If you pass, you can schedule your exam as normal. If you don't respond in time or the details don't check out, the audit fails; PMI refunds the fee minus a processing charge and you may have to wait a year to reapply. The simplest protection: write accurate descriptions and warn your references before you apply.

  • Do I need the job title "Project Manager" to qualify for the PMP exam?

    No. PMI looks at what you did, not your title. If you were responsible for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes on a project, that counts, whether your title was engineer, team lead, analyst, consultant or coordinator. When you describe each project in your application, focus on the work you led across the project life cycle. If your application is audited, a supervisor will need to confirm that experience.   • How difficult is the PMP exam?

    It's challenging, mostly because it tests judgment rather than memory. Most questions describe a real project situation and ask what you would do first or next, and several answers can look reasonable. The July 2026 update added a case-study section with linked questions, graphic-based questions and more weight on business topics: the Business Environment domain rose from 8% to 26%.     PMI doesn't publish a pass rate. Candidates who pass usually combine hands-on project experience with structured training and several full-length timed mock exams.

  • What is the passing score for the PMP exam?

    There isn't a fixed published passing score. PMI sets the standard with psychometric analysis, so the bar reflects question difficulty rather than a simple percentage. Your result is a pass or fail, plus a rating for each domain (People, Process, Business Environment): Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement. Aim for "Target" or better across all three. In practice, consistently scoring well on full-length, timed mock exams is the best sign you're ready.   • How many questions on the PMP exam are scored?

    170 of the 180 questions are scored. The other 10 are unscored pretest questions PMI is trialing for future exams. They are mixed in and look identical to the rest, so treat every question as if it counts. The 170 scored questions are split across the domains as People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%. See the PMP exam topics covered under each domain.

  • Is the PMP exam open-book, and can I use a calculator?

    No, it's closed-book: you can't bring notes, books or your own devices. You do get a basic on-screen calculator inside the exam software, plus a whiteboard for rough work (a digital one for online exams; an erasable board or scratch paper at test centers). Calculations are a small part of the exam; most questions are about judgment and situations. It still pays to know the important PMP formulas, especially for earned value management.

  • Can I take the PMP exam online from home?

    Yes. You can take it online through Pearson VUE's OnVUE service, or at a Pearson VUE test center (which PMI recommends). For online testing you need:

    • A private, quiet room with a clear desk

    • A computer with a webcam and microphone that passes Pearson VUE's system test

    • A stable internet connection

    • A valid government photo ID

    Check-in starts 30 minutes before your slot and includes photos and a room scan. A proctor watches the whole session, which is recorded. If the room or equipment fails the checks, you may not be able to test and can lose the fee, so run the system test well in advance.

  • Can I pause or reschedule my PMP exam?

    Pausing: You can't pause at will. The exam has two optional 10-minute breaks: the first after the case-study section, the second about halfway through the remaining questions. Once you start a break, you can't go back to earlier questions. Leaving your seat or the webcam view at any other time can end the exam.
