About the Survey Report

Simplilearn conducted our 2023 mid-year survey of current and prospective learners to get an overview of their experiences with and plans for professional upskilling. The survey provides insights on learners’ skill development experiences, the various types of training they prefer, and the skill domains that will receive their highest priority in 2023. 

Simplilearn’s respondents were drawn from a worldwide audience. The respondents comprised of CXOs, Head of Departments, Managers, Students, Freelancers and Individual contributors. 

Key Insights for Upskilling

Key insights from the survey are shown in the infographic. The sentiment among learners is optimistic: 95% of respondents agree that upskilling will help them improve their careers. Other findings include:

  • Most respondents expect positive change in their careers in the coming year: 19% expect a salary hike at their current job and 18% expect a promotion. 41% are looking for a career change. However, 14% feel limited by the lack of opportunities at their current job.
  • Respondents who want to pursue upskilling expect concrete benefits: 48% expect upskilling will lead to a new job with a new employer. 39% expect it will qualify them for a salary hike, and another 39% anticipate it will open a new career path in their company. 43% of them have the additional goal of expanding their knowledge.
  • Learners prefer certifications for upskilling: 51% plan to enroll in part-time or online certifications, while 23% will pursue self-directed learning.12% will take on open source projects for acquiring skills. 7% intend to take a career break to enroll in college full-time.
  • The most sought-after digital economy skills among respondents are data science and business analytics, program and project management, and artificial intelligence & machine learning. These skill areas are highly prized across a broad spectrum of industries.

Shifts in Priorities

A growing number of learners believe they will receive the greatest career value from certification programs. Of those who plan to enroll in courses/certifications, 30% expect it will help them to find a job with a new employer, 25% expect it will open up a new career path with their current employer, 16% believe it will help them earn a promotion, and 22% anticipate that their new certifications will help them get a salary hike.
