Let's begin by looking at what Google AI is all about, reviewing Google's AI Advancements, and then moving on to the AI projects Google is currently working on.

The Lowdown on Google AI

In 2007, Google put the wheels of mobile market domination in motion by releasing an open-source operating system for phones. It was called Android. You may have heard of it. In 2019, Google began its campaign to dominate Artificial Intelligence by releasing TensorFlow, an open-source machine learning platform.

TensorFlow consists of libraries of files that help computer scientists and researchers build systems that break down data such as voice recordings or images and allow computers to make decisions based on that information. Currently, over 50 Google products rely on TensorFlow to turn deep learning into a tool.

Google has spent the past several years working on a vast Artificial Intelligence platform. However, they prefer the term “machine intelligence” since the phrase “Artificial Intelligence” has been around so long that it carries too many associations. Also, Google is striving to create real intelligence — it just happens to be for machines!

Google has long relied on Artificial Intelligence-related resources to power, improve, and enhance its core products such as the Google search engine, voice search, and its photos app. By releasing TensorFlow free to the public, Google gains increased exposure and benefits from the work done by researchers using the open-source system.

What AI Projects is Google Working on Lately?

Over the last year, Google Research has worked on AI projects covering many relevant topics, such as COVID-19 forecasting, weather and climate change, robotics, medical diagnostics, and natural language understanding.

1. AI + Writing

Google’s Creative Lab in Sydney, Australia, is teaming up with the Digital Writers’ Festival team and a group of industry professionals (e.g., developers, writers, engineers) to see if we can use machine learning to inspire writers and enrich their process. Google’s Creative Labs have also done similar projects in other aspects of the arts, such as music and drawing.

2. Contactless Sleep Sensing

Good sleep is an integral part of our well-being, and Google is researching and studying sleep patterns and nighttime wellness. Sleep Sensing in Nest Hub uses radar-based sleep tracking, paired with an algorithm for snore and cough detection. This new development helps sleepers to understand how much sleep they’re getting and its quality, all while conveniently preserving their privacy. In an age where healthcare is a significant concern, this AI project empowers people and helps them practice self-care, possibly mitigating potential health issues.

3. Machine Learning for Computer Architecture

No matter how many new advances we see in computer hardware, there is always room for improvement. Machine learning requires high-performance systems, and Google is researching custom accelerators such as the Edge TPUs and Google TPUs to boost available computing power. This AI project will help build more efficient hardware, give people a better grasp of accelerator design space, and unlock new capabilities.

As such, Google researchers are developing new audio and codecs to provide greater quality and minimize latency in real-time communication while using less data. A codec is a compression technique that decodes and encodes signals for storage or transmission. Codecs permit bandwidth-hungry applications to send data efficiently while guaranteeing high-quality communication anytime, anywhere.

This research will eventually help billions of users worldwide stay connected with high-quality audio and video, even on lower bandwidth connections. That way, even people who can’t afford the faster networks can still stay connected and conduct business without impediment.

5. Data Mining and Modeling

The rise and proliferation of big data have presented ever-growing challenges in disciplines like data mining and modeling. There is far too much information out there, and today’s businesses need better ways to handle the influx. Google Research is looking into creating more efficient algorithms, developing new machine-learning approaches, or designing better-privacy-preserving classification methods. It can train various models, including gradient-boosted trees, decision trees, and deep neural networks, and can also be used to build ensembles of these models. AdaNet also uses regularisation strategies to guarantee the caliber of the models it generates.

8. Dopamine

Dopamine is a framework built on TensorFlow that lets users try out different reinforcement learning algorithms. You can look into how reinforcement learning algorithms work in a safe place where you can try out different ways of doing things. Dopamine is great for both beginners and experts who want to learn more about reinforcement learning algorithms and use them to study and build machine learning and AI systems.

Additionally, Google has released a series of papers exploring the use of dopamine in machine learning, such as "Dopamine: A Research Framework for Deep Reinforcement Learning" and "Dopamine: A Research Framework for Fast Prototyping of Reinforcement Learning Algorithms."

9. Bard

Google Bard, the talk of the town, has the ultimate goal is to combine the wide range of human understanding with the sophistication, originality, and power of large-scale linguistic models. It uses data collected from the internet to provide answers that are both current and accurate. You can use Bard as a way to express yourself creatively and as a springboard for exploration.

Google created the chatbot Bard to compete with ChatGPT. It is built on the Dopamine Framework, an open-source research framework created to aid in the rapid prototyping of reinforcement learning algorithms by researchers. Bard is created to be able to hold conversations that seem genuine and respond.

10. Deepmind Lab

DeepMind Lab is a three-dimensional platform that lets you use deep reinforcement learning algorithms to study and build machine learning and AI systems. The simple API of DeepMind Lab enables you to try out different AI designs and explore their capabilities. There are also puzzles on the platform that help with deep reinforcement learning. 11. Bullet Physics

Bullet Physics is an SDK that focuses on body dynamics, collisions, and interactions between rigid and soft bodies. It is written in C++ and provides a wide range of features and tools for game development, robotic simulation, and visual effects. The SDK also has pybullet, a Python module that uses machine learning, physical simulations, and robotics.

Designed to simulate accurate physical interactions in 3D settings, Bullet Physics is used extensively in the video gaming industry and also been used in other fields, such as robotic simulation and medical visualization. Rigid body dynamics, soft body dynamics, and discrete collision detection may all be simulated via Bullet Physics. It is created in C++ and works with many different operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS.

12. Magenta

Magenta is a Google Brain research project examining how machine learning is used in producing art and music. TensorFlow, a Google-developed open-source machine learning package, forms the project's foundation. Magenta has created several tools and models to enable people to compose music using machine learning, including plugins, datasets, and apps. In addition, Magenta has made several courses and materials available to teach people about machine learning as it relates to producing music and art.

13. Kuberflow

Kuberflow is a set of tools for Kubernetes that helps make it easier to deploy machine learning workflows.
