Roadmap to CEH Certification

Certified Ethical hacker also known as ‘White Hat Hacker’ is a skilled professional who uses the same methods and tools like that of a malicious hacker to find and fix computer security vulnerabilities. He /She performs such testing while protecting the network from possible threats coming from outside. Network security has always been an important concern since internet came into existence. Whereas traditional hackers or bad guys exploit networks for malicious or evil reasons, ethical hackers work like good guys and protect computer systems from dangerous intrusions. CEH is one of the most popular and sought after security certification provided by the EC Council.

The term, ‘ethical hacking’ was coined by John Patrick in 1995.

EC Council’s latest CEH V8 version is a complete and elaborative Ethical Hacking and Information System Security Auditing Program emphasizing on latest security threats, advanced attack vendors and practical real life application of the latest hacking techniques, methodologies, tools, techniques and security measures. Most of the IT companies have already made CEH Certification a must qualification for security related posts making it a go-to certification for security professionals.

Accreditation Body

The International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants or EC Council is a member supported organization that provides professional certification in the IT security field. Best known for its CEH certification, EC Council is headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Security Officers, Auditors, Security Practitioners, Site Administrators, Webmasters etc., can take up and benefit from the CEH certification.

Eligibility Requirements

To take up the CEH Exam, a candidate must have enrolled for a CEH course at an EC Council Accredited Training Centre (ATC) or prepared through self-study.

Official Training

A candidate must attend an official Instructor led Training (ILT), Computer Based Training, and (CBT), online live training or academic learning.


In case a candidate wishes to take up the CEH Exam without official training, he/she must possess-

1. Educational qualification that reflects specialization in Information Security.

2. Minimum 2 years of related experience in the field of Information Security.]

3. You are required to deposit a non- refundable eligibility application fee of USD 100.

4. Complete and submit the Exam Eligibility Application Form.

5. Buy an official exam voucher from

Eligibility Process

Candidates are required to fill an online request for the Eligibility Application form at Complete and submit the Electronic Exam Eligibility Application. The processing time for eligibility application is 5 working days post which applicants can contact the EC Council if they haven’t received any communication.

This application is valid till 60 days.

EC Council will then contact applicant’s boss or department head for authentication and verification purposes.

After the approval of application, the candidate requires to purchase an exam voucher directly from the EC Council. The candidate should take up the exam within 3 months of purchasing the voucher from EC Council.

CEH V8 Exam Format

The CEH exam consists of 125 multiple choice questions. Duration of the exam is 4 hours and the passing score is 70%. Test delivery can be through Web based via Prometric Prime and Vue Testing Centre. The CEH Exam code varies at different testing centers for both web based and vue testing centers. Both the exams are identical in origin and lead to CEH certification. The CEH Exam costs USD 500.

A candidate needs to answer questions related to security, hacking tools and techniques and will be required to decipher exploit codes, study log files and infer output.

Certification Renewal

Candidates require to earn EC Council Continuing Education Credits (ECE) to maintain the certification.

Retake Policy

If a candidate fails to pass the exam in first attempt, he/ she can take the re exam without any waiting period.  There is no restrictions on the number of attempts. Candidate will require to request for a fresh Eligibility Voucher at a Prometric APTC and send an email to with a scanned copy of exam score.

Receiving the Certification

The candidate will receive the certification & your welcome kit within 8 weeks of successfully passing the exam.

Certification Renewal

Candidates require to earn EC Council Continuing Education Credits (ECE) to maintain the certification.

CEH Instructors

The EC Council is very particular about the quality of its instructors and highly encourages security professionals who are experienced enough to become CEH instructors. In order to become a CEH Instructor, it is required that the person is CEH certified and has a sound experience in Information Security. Aspiring CEH instructors are also expected to attend EC Council’s ‘Train the Trainer’ Program and clear the CEI exam.
