When you think of marketing, what do you picture? Maybe an episode of “Mad Men”? Or a TV commercial or an ad on Facebook? Perhaps you have a narrow view of the field, thinking if you’re not a designer or copywriter, there’s no place for you. Or maybe you recognize digital marketing for what it is: a field full of opportunity.

If you think it’s a field full of opportunity, you’re right. And the number of digital marketing careers is growing by leaps and bounds. A Forrester research predicts U.S. spending on digital marketing will reach nearly $120 billion by 2021. All that spending will bring about new jobs, and those jobs will be as varied as they can be. Digital marketing needs people who are creative, yes, but the field also needs people with numerous other skills too. Some parts of digital marketing require strong analytical skills while others require strategy. Some in the field may be good researchers while others excel at quick thinking.

Maybe marketing once used to be dominated by the creative types, but today it’s a field for everyone. And it’s a good time to enter the field. According to Burning Glass Technologies, four out of 10 marketing job postings now specify digital marketing skills. In addition, the report says job listings that require these skills almost doubled between 2011 and 2016.

If you’re ready for a career change and you’re considering digital marketing, meet four people who did just that, proactively taking their careers in a new direction by getting trained in the digital marketing field. Read their stories, and then create your own…

Ramneek Sharma, from UI Developer to Senior Marketing Manager

Ramneek Sharma recognized that his industry was going through a transformation and that he needed to be proactive about his career before he was considered obsolete. Ramneek was a UI developer and product development lead. With an advanced degree, Ramneek had a solid education as well as 15 years of experience designing and developing thousands of B2B and B2C websites. But he recognized that website development was no longer a critical skill, and new website development tools and platforms would soon replace employees like him. He knew it was time to change his career path.

He looked to the future to determine the skills he would need and realized it was digital marketing. He turned to Simplilearn for training to prepare him for that future. Through the coursework with Simplilearn, Ramneek learned critical digital marketing skills like search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, pay-per-click (PPC), web analytics, mobile and email marketing, and strategy. After completing his training, Ramneek was hired as a senior marketing manager. He now handles client servicing, digital strategy planning, project proposals, and business development for his new employer.

Mireille Davis and Girish Pai, Digital Marketing Entrepreneurs

Mireille Davis and Girish Pai met by coincidence after they completed the digital marketing with Simplilearn. Both had taken an indirect path to the digital marketing field, although both had an entrepreneurial spirit. Mireille was a former business development specialist with technical writing and contract negotiations as part of her skillset. Girish came from an IT and telecom background, specializing in global business development and product management. Both had started and run businesses, which drove their interest in digital marketing.

After their Simplilearn training, the two alumni became acquainted on Quora, and discovered they shared thoughts and ideas, as well as a passion for digital marketing. They hit it off so well, they co-founded a business called HitbySEO, despite the 8,000-mile distance between them. HitbySEO is a growth hacking and digital marketing firm based in Bangalore, India with offices in San Diego, California.
