The ITIL certification is a qualification intended for those who wish to show their knowledge of the ITIL scheme as a whole. Holders of this certificate must show their achievement in a variety of ITIL qualifications that are well rounded, superior in quality and demonstrate the highest possible skills in ITIL best practices. This is a highly regarded credential that will help you in your own personal development as well as your IT career and advance your knowledge in IT management services. Another purpose of this qualification is to qualify you to the ITIL Master Level, which is the top and last qualification in the ITIL scheme.

Accreditation body

The ITIL Expert certification can be offered by any accredited ITIL body. However, the credential is best received from known bodies all over the world and their affiliates. It is important to note that some of these bodies offer both the course and present the accreditation while others offer only accreditation. It is also important to note that the ITIL Expert level is a very crucial stage in the entirety of the ITIL scheme. It dictates your entire knowledge and leads you to the topmost stage of Master Level. It is, therefore, advisable to invest well in the accreditation body you choose.
Top accreditation bodies for ITIL certification are:
  1. APMG International
  2. EXIN
  3. PeopleCert
  4. TUV-SUD
  5. BCS
  6. CSME
  7. Dansk IT
  8. Loyalist Certification Services

Eligibility Requirements

The ITIL Expert level qualification has some possible faculties from the ITIL framework that one can choose from in order to gain this highly-regarded certification. But before one can explore these modules, it is better to note the qualifications first:
    1. Any candidate who wishes to attain the certification in ITIL Expert Level must have the ITIL Foundation certificate or have a bridge qualification equivalent.

ITIL® Foundation Training

  1. Qualified candidates must be able to prove they have acquired a minimum of 17 credits from both the ITIL Foundation Level and Intermediate Level modules.
  2. The 17 credits can also be accommodated from credits earned by previous qualifications and other complementary qualifications.
  3. After gathering the 17 credits and other complementary credits, a candidate must then pass a certification known as Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) faculty and get a total of 22 credits as the minimum required level in the ITIL Expert Level certification.
Once a candidate manages to complete all the required ITIL modules and achieved the minimum required credits, they are then considered to have achieved an acceptable knowledge across all the ITIL faculties to be able to handle the ITIL Expert Level.

Certification process

As mentioned above in the qualification, a viable candidate needs to go through a series of qualifications, achieve a minimum acceptable number of credits and then be granted the certificate. It all depends with the examination institute you choose to have your training and examinations in. Apart from training and taking an exam in MALC, candidates who hold the Service Manager or Practitioner qualifications can take advantage of these certificates to qualify for the ITIL Expert Level. Most examiners will train a candidate missing any of the required qualifications and then hand over the certificates to them once they pass the examination.

ITIL works on a credit-based system based on Blooms Taxonomy. ITIL foundation is at Bloom's level 1&2 and provides the candidate with 2 credits. ITIL intermediate is at Bloom's Taxonomy level 3&4 and provides the candidate with 3 credits each if they choose Life-cycle stream and 4 credits each if they choose Capability Stream. Life-cycle Stream has 5 papers, and Capability Stream has 4 papers. The MALC provides the candidate with 5 Credits and is at Bloom's Taxonomy level 5&6.
In all 20 credits are required to be certified as ITIL expert.

It requires a high level of commitment and anybody who is interested in acquiring one should be financially prepared. It is, therefore, wise to choose the right training partner who will not only make you realize value for your money, but also give you the best training possible. Simplilearn is one of such accreditation partner you can trust. There are some benefits for anyone who chooses to have their ITIL Expert accreditation from Simplilearn. The MALC examination is the final qualification required to get the ITIL Expert Level certification and requires a candidate to pass with a passing score of 70%. Once a candidate passes this test, then they automatically qualify for the expert certification. The other qualifications are certifications that all candidates are expected to have. After gaining your certificate, then it’s time to prove your job position in your organization and also improve your personal life. There is the option to take up further courses and apply for the Master Level ITIL certification which simply means you have the required knowledge in IT.

Exam Format

The MALC faculty in the ITIL scheme sits between the Intermediate and Expert Level of ITIL and acts as the final qualification to acquire your Expert certification in ITIL. Its main purpose is to help a candidate use and integrate their ITIL knowledge in real-world settings and at your own personal level. The examination takes a format of multiple-choice questions of up to 50 questions. There are 10 questions for each paper, and a candidate needs to score 35 out of the possible 50 marks – that’s about 70% marks. The exam is a closed-book format and takes up to 120 minutes to complete.

Retaking the Exam

All candidates who wish to achieve the ITIL Expert certification need to pass the MALC examination as the final step towards successful candidacy. It’s, therefore, important for one to be keen while taking up the test. Careful training and experience are required. However, if for one reason a candidate is unable to perform excellently, then they have the option of letting their exam providers know. This will then make the exam and training providers highlight the part of the syllabus the candidate did not pass so well. The exam can be retaken by paying the examination fee for another test.

Career growth and role of post-certification

The ITIL Expert certification is the perfect credential for those who choose the career path of Information Technology. A holder of this certification can handle many organizational functions such as Service Desk, IT Operations Management, Technical management, Security Administrator, Database Administrators, Service Delivery Team Member, Manager and many more. The credential’s demand is high globally and makes holders stand out from others. The pay for those who can handle the mentioned posts is very high, with Payscale.com estimating the median salary to be close to $95,000 per annum.
Post-examination requirement
After the examination, a candidate is handed the ITIL Expert Level certification that is supposed to propel the candidate higher in their career. It is therefore encouraged that they maintain the highest level of professionalism. They are also meant to participate in PDUs offered by their trainers and exam providers. These PDUs help them keep their knowledge balanced. Candidates can also use this chance to prepare for the Master ITIL Level.
