Preparing for ITIL? Take this test to know where you stand!

Here are 5 tips that will help you clear the ITIL Foundation exam in the first attempt.

1. Practice and practice harder

Yes, this is the ‘mantra’ you would need to follow before the ITIL Foundation exam. Work on ITIL sample papers and practice questions as that will let you evaluate your preparation and give you a grasp of the real exam. While working on ITIL practice tests, make sure that you are following the time duration. This will help you finish the actual exam on time. Most of the participants fail the exam due to shortage of time; therefore practice can help you attain perfection.

2. Take your time to understand the material

Take time to understand every question as most of the participants miss out due to not reading it thoroughly. At times, there are some questions phrased as negatives e.g. ‘which of the following is not a life cycle module?’ If you miss out on the ‘not’ in this question, you might end up submitting the wrong answer. Besides, there will be trick questions for which you need to highlight the keyword and crack it. So, ‘UNDERSTANDING’ the question is must before answering.

3. Learn the lifecycle and capability modules

ITIL has lifecycle and capability modules. Although, the intermediate level of ITIL qualification goes deep into each module, the basic understanding needs to be right at the foundation level. ITIL Foundation is all about getting the basics right and therefore you need to have a clear understanding of each of the ITIL lifecycle and capability modules. From abbreviations to jargons, make sure that you have a good grasp over them.

4. Memorize the keywords

To crack the ITIL Foundation exam, you need to get the ‘keywords’ right. Keywords are nothing but terms used in ITIL such as "service strategy, service design, service transition, service level agreements, operational level agreements, contracts etc." These keywords are linked to other keywords, e.g. "customer value" is linked to "service strategy" module. Similarly, "maintenance" is linked to "continual service improvement" and so on. This will help you get the right answers at a faster pace. Master the ITIL keywords, and you are ready to ace the exam.

5. Think ITIL only

Many participants answer as per the current or previous organization standards, which can backfire during the examination. Therefore while attempting for the foundation level exam, think only of ITIL and not your organization. This exam is to evaluate your understanding on the ITIL processes, functions and concepts, and not about how your organization implements ITIL.
