A data scientist is regarded as a top-ranking professional in any analytics organization. In fact, Glassdoor ranked data scientist as number two on its list of 2021’s 25 Best Jobs. By enrolling in Simplilearn’s Data Scientist Course, I saw a way to get the skills and certification I needed to chart my own career.

I wanted to take up a skill that is in demand in the market and I saw that data science was an upcoming field. I always had an inclination towards the technical side and being a project manager did not stop me.

I have enjoyed a varied career in IT. After receiving a Bachelor’s of Technology in computer science and engineering from Uttar Pradesh Technical University, I worked at Syntel, Pune, as a Java developer for seven years. I also had an opportunity to work in the U.S. and U.K. for a couple of years each. My next stop was Tata Consultancy Services as a project and program manager, working with American Express.

I then worked for British Telecom as a project manager. It was during my tenure there that I decided to fulfill my goal of becoming a freelancer in a marketable profession. But first, I needed the training and professional certification.

I checked various courses online and I came to know about Simplilearn from my friends.

A Thorough Data Science Certification Training

Initially, I was planning to take one or two data science courses, but instead opted for the more-comprehensive Simplilearn’s Data Scientist Master’s Program. I wasn’t sure about whether to go for Python, R or SAS or even start with big data. The training concludes with a capstone project to help us master concepts of data science and big data. We work on solving real-world problems leveraging the skills and technologies learned throughout the program. These capstone projects cover all the key aspects of data extraction, cleaning, and visualization to model building and tuning. Some of these examples include providing valuable, marketable experience in e-commerce, telecom, workforce analytics, retail, healthcare, insurance, banking, stock market, and engineering.

I’m a native and current resident of Pune, India. When I decided to advance my career, I chose the Simplilearn Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Data Analytics. I was about to complete my Bachelor’s degree in IT from Viva College in Mumbai when the college postponed final exams for eight months, due to the Covid-19 outbreak. I’ve always been an eager learner. As the current deputy vice president of risk and governance for Axis Bank in Mumbai, I’ve successfully climbed the career ladder by upskilling whenever I see a need.

With nearly 19 years of varied experience in IT, I’ve never turned away from a challenge. After many years in corporate, I realized that I needed an MBA to achieve my career goals. I earned a postgraduate diploma in management, finance, and corporate strategy from the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode.

Turning To Simplilearn and Purdue to Learn Data Science

Next, I found the need to sharpen my understanding of data science. My current role demands a lot of understanding of data. I wanted to be self-dependent in terms of understanding and interpreting data and machine learning. I have also been interested in data science. I am from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and am currently based out of Bangalore. I work with Duxes Labs as a Data Analyst. Coming from a Mechanical Engineering background, it was difficult to get a job in the IT field, so I initially took an operations job with Flipkart, where I worked for a year. Later, I became a Senior Operations Executive at Swiggy and worked there for almost two years. I wasn’t satisfied with my career growth or salary, though, so I decided to switch fields. I live in Pune, Maharashtra, with my family. After 11 years+ of working as an Assistant Professor in an Engineering college, I felt my career was stagnating. Sometimes life throws unexpected obstacles in your way. But first, a little background.

My Background

I hail from Nagpur, Maharashtra. I completed my Bachelors in Engineering from KDK College of Engineering in 2017 and got placed in M Junction Services Ltd. as an Associate. While there, I completed several projects and worked for a client, Steel Authority of India, Chandrapur. While working at M Junction, I got an opportunity to learn various languages. Everything seemed to be falling into place.

However, in early 2020, things went off the road when I went in for surgery. Although the surgery was successful, the doctor advised me not to work, so I had to leave my job.

But even my necessary departure from the workforce couldn’t diminish my enthusiasm, desire for knowledge, dedication, and ability to learn things quickly. I still wanted to learn new things, be it technological innovations or new languages. And I still had my hobbies and interests, things like cooking and dancing.

The Challenge: Upskilling After a Health-Related Absence from the IT Industry

Although my career plans had stalled, technology and innovation march on. The last thing I wanted to do was to fall behind. And the problem is, in the fast-paced, ever-growing IT world, one or two years is like an eternity.

I decided I needed to take some online courses and get myself upskilled and stay current. However, there was a dizzying number of online educational choices. Fortunately, I had friends who had taken the Data Science course from Simplilearn and were pleased with the results. There’s nothing like positive word of mouth to convince you!
