The Journey 

After completing my graduation and post graduation, I joined MITECH as a Delivery Head. I worked there for almost 8 years, and then joined Value Labs as a Project Manager. Based on my performance and work ethic, I was then promoted to Senior Project Manager after 2 years. Currently, I am working as an Assistant General Manager at Al Tomouh IT LLC located in Muscat, Oman. I have been a technical officer at the company for the past 1.5 years. 

The Challenge 

I aim to become a Chief Technical Officer in the long-run. I want to keep upscaling my technical knowledge to be able to lead a team of  technical managers. 

I was looking for an opportunity to change my career path. Being a program manager was fun, but I wanted to explore the technical side of handling a project and hence, Business Analytics. From a project manager to assistant general manager, the journey has been thrilling and it was because of my decision to upskill, that I could make it.

AI and ML training helps a middle-aged mom advance in her career with marketable skills and confidence.  

I loved my job at Dell Technologies, but I suddenly found myself out of work due to my limited education and training. I turned that around by upskilling myself with the Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning program, and today I am a machine learning data manager at Abbin. 

I should mention that I’m a 41-year-old mother and grandmother. When I was 18, I joined the U.S. Army and worked in its human resources division. After my two-year service, I dealt with some personal setbacks and struggled to find a decent job. A hiring agency connected me with Dell Technologies, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, due to my limited education qualifications, I was eventually let go. That was a sign to me that I needed to upskill and I enrolled for the Machine Learning program offered by Simplilearn. The course gave me a toolbox of skills and boosted my portfolio. It definitely prepared me for the work I’m doing now and for roles I hope to have in the future. My goal is to be a machine learning and Python expert, to work as a freelancer, and teach these skills to others. 

Moving Forward and Not Looking Back

Three years ago, I vowed to keep moving forward and never look back, no matter what. Enduring tough times and a difficult marriage made me realize the importance of self-dependence.

I earned a meager income through my photography business, but I was able to build a house for our family. One day, a hiring agency called looking for candidates to work at Dell Technologies. I cracked that job and simply loved it. Everyone there made me push my limits and I thrived on finding solutions to workplace problems. 

However, because I wasn’t certified, I was let go from my job. I was devastated. The job made me feel confident, smart, and self-dependent. From then on, it was my motto to get back to Dell Technologies. 

First, I needed upskilling. I enrolled in Simplilearn’s course and that has been a great decision for me.

Today, I credit Simplilearn with my love of self-learning. Whenever I land up a new job, I’m confident that I’ll give my best. My intellectual abilities are expanding exponentially and I am very happy about that. I decided to upskill myself because information technology is changing very fast. I’m an engineering professional with a bachelor’s in information technology from KPK Agricultural University Peshawar (IBMS).

While working as a junior DevOps engineer with Whizpool in Islamabad, Pakistan, I researched online learning options and discovered Simplilearn’s DevOps Engineer Master’s program. I joined Rhesus Inc. in 2019 as a network engineer. I joined my current company, Desjardins, in July last year as a SAS administrator, hoping to become a programmer 

With my background in programming, I believed I knew a little about everything. But I aimed to know about everything in the programming world. That led me to Simplilearn’s Full Stack Java Developer online course. I thought it would help me change my career, so I took the course last year.

An inquisitive upbringing

I have been to many countries since childhood because my father wanted me to see the world for myself. I also was educated abroad and received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Maine.

A Bit About My Background

I am an IT professional with almost 15 years of related experience, which I’ve always tried to supplement by upskilling myself to stay current with the never-ending parade of new technologies.

There were not many IT opportunities in the Philippines, my native country, so in 2008 I moved to Saudi Arabia for IT-related work. I worked in Saudi Arabia for almost 14 years with a series of IT companies. I missed my family and my home and wanted to move back to the Philippines, but the job choices were limited.

If I wanted to work closer to home, I’d have to ensure that I was qualified for the right positions. As I mentioned before, I always made a good effort at upskilling and keeping up with new IT innovations. I knew there were ample opportunities in the field of cloud computing. I was working in a similar field and yes, I was in touch with cloud technology.
