I’ve learned that no matter what a person’s profession, earning a PMP® Certification from Simplilearn furnishes a project management professional with the organizational strategies needed for success. 

Ten years ago, I stepped into an IT leadership role as a program manager with the Canadian Police Department in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The one stipulation for this promotion was that I attain a PMP certification. The job had a lot of responsibilities, including managing our 911 system.

I had a short timeframe to get certified and started using a different online learning company. My experience with that other firm was awful, and I couldn’t get through a single unit without issues. Finally, I found Simplilearn’s PMP Certification Training Course, which helped me tremendously.

The skills I acquired from Simplilearn’s course have proven to be a great help because I learned how to streamline processes after completing the course. After completing the course, I was able to understand the status of projects clearly, and I was also able to make recommendations much more quickly, which my peers were unable to do.  

I chose to retire early from the police department, and I now teach people how to find early financial freedom and create generational wealth. The knowledge I  acquired from Simplilearn is helping a lot in my new venture. I am planning a conference this year, and the project management skills I gained will come into play.

I have 20 years of database experience and a bachelor’s degree in co-op electrical engineering from the University of Alberta. There are many different reasons people decide to change careers. For me, I wanted to change my lifestyle as it related to my work schedule. With a bachelor’s degree in geomatics engineering and nearly eight years of experience in the geomatics field, I found myself in a job that involved extensive traveling. As I considered my options, I became interested in programming and automation because the industry is fast-moving with ample opportunities for career growth.

I’d been working for Airborne Imaging in the same position, as a geomatics field technician associate, for four years when I began looking for a course to prepare me for the career change I desired. While I had an engineering degree, it was in no way related to programming, and I didn’t have any other prior experience as such. I decided to study DevOps because it’s the perfect blend of programming and operational automation that today’s most successful development teams. 

Simplilearn’s Post Graduate Program (PGP) in DevOps was the launching pad for my programming career. After the course, I was hired by Xplornet Communications in November 2021 as a GIS developer and increased my salary by 12 percent. Even better, I get to use the valuable programming and automation skills I learned every day in my job.

I really enjoyed the DevOps course. The modules provided enough information and instruction even for someone like me with no prior knowledge and who was changing fields. Another highlight was the hands-on Docker certification training I received during the program. 

Upskilling Options that Offer the Right Skills and Schedule

I researched various options to find a course that would offer me virtual classes but at the same time prepare me for a new career. I found Simplilearn through one of its Instagram advertisements and was very happy to find a curriculum I wanted and an online learning option that fit my schedule. 

I also knew that my brother Manuel was looking for something similar, so we read more about the curriculum and thought it would be a great fit. Then, we decided to enroll in the program together.  

As I mentioned, my previous job at Airborne Imaging involved a lot of traveling. So, I studied while traveling. My job was weather dependent, which meant we didn’t fly on cloudy or rainy days. We also had our rotation schedule—30 straight days of working and then 30 off days. The flexibility of the certification program allowed me to study on those 30 days off-days and take live online classes during weekends.

Today’s technological innovations arrive at a breathtaking pace, and if you want to stay relevant and employable, you need to keep up. It also helps to stay current if you’re planning on tackling a new career. That’s where upskilling comes in. When you upskill, you build upon your current skillset with new knowledge.

But there are so many available avenues for upskilling. Perhaps too many! How does one make the right choice?

As it happens, I made the right choice when I picked Simplilearn’s Cloud Computing program. But in order for you to get a good idea of how I arrived at this choice, let me tell you a little bit about myself.

My Background

I’m a Product Manager from Mumbai, with over 13 years of experience, with a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) in Computer Science from the School of Computer Science, DAVV. I also completed a Post Graduate Program in Management, Business Administration and Management, General from Sunstone Business School.

I had already used Simplilearn before for training. I took their PMI-ACP Certification Training Course and had a good experience with it. I was impressed with how they acted quickly to resolve any issues I raised, and they provided all the assistance I needed. In 2020, I was laid off from my IT job in the hospitality industry when COVID hit. Instead of treading water, I used unemployment as an opportunity to learn and transform my career. I chose Simplilearn’s online courses in ITIL® 4 Foundation, Agile Scrum Master, and PRINCE2® Foundation, which opened up new employment possibilities. For example, from the first moment I added a new certification to my resume, I began getting replies to my applications, which soon led to a new job. Today I work as a technical account manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with HRS (Hospitality & Retail Systems) in Düsseldorf, Germany.

My new employer was impressed that I was enrolled in the PRINCE2® Foundation course, and they gave me time to complete it during my orientation period. The entire experience of being laid off and focusing on learning ended up being a career restart for me.

Making a Career Move

Before the layoff, I had contemplated making a career change after 15 years in the hospitality industry. I earned an MBA in hospitality administration from Cornell University and a Master of Arts from Silesian University. While I genuinely enjoyed working with the IT team at Hyatt Hotels Corporation, I thought of expanding my practical knowledge with theory. My first goal was to gain an ITIL certification. When I was laid off after COVID hit in 2020, I had the time and extra motivation to upskill my portfolio.

Since the start of my career, my goal has always been to strive for new heights by gradually elevating my position while also increasing my income. I’m willing to put in the extra work needed and acquire new skills in order to reach my destination.  

I’m a mechanical engineering graduate and have worked with Peloton (a leading, Canadian-based oil and gas software company) for over four years. In 2020, after working there for two years, I became aware that the company was starting the hiring process for a new infrastructure team in the DevOps Infrastructure group. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to advance in my career.

At that time, I was working as an implementation specialist for ProdView, the company’s production data lifecycle solution. I wanted a new position and believed that joining the new DevOps infrastructure group would mean a promotion and salary increase. It also meant working with a new team, which was exciting, too. My colleagues advised me to take a course in DevOps before applying for the position. So, I decided to upskill myself. 

Interestingly, my brother was also looking to upskill at the same time. We agreed to complete Simplilearn’s Post Graduate Program (PGP) in DevOps together. After the course, we were both promoted at our respective companies. My new title at Peloton is ProdView Infrastructure Specialist. Even more, I received a 21 percent salary increase in November 2021.

My Journey

My professional career hasn’t always been linear. I studied Electronics and Telecommunication and graduated from Sardar Patel University in 2007 before deciding to grow in marketing. I then pursued PGDM in Marketing from the SIES College of Management Studies in 2011. For the last 12 years, I have been working in my dream company, Google Cloud. I am currently a Business Manager and am responsible for ensuring people use the right tools and collaboration strategies, allowing them to expand and scale better with Google Technologies.

My company provides a lot of flexibility in work, so I rarely go to the office. I h ave been assigned to manage various regions, so my work involves a lot of traveling and interactions with various companies’ CEOs, CPOS, Co-Founders, and even senior-level stakeholders, including the Board of Directors. 

The Challenge

While my job is fantastic, I know I must follow my learning mantra. At my Google Cloud division, I realized that majority of my interactions with the customers revolved around Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This was becoming a promising sector for me in terms of sales. So, to serve my customers better and improve my performance in my current role, I decided that taking up an in-depth course in AI and ML would be the perfect way to upskill myself.

Professionally, I want to be known as an individual who understands new-age technologies (like metaverse), both their application and implication to a specific industry. I would like to see myself grow as a person who can contribute to helping a social issue or an industry-specific issue concerning new technologies and innovations. This is why upskilling seemed like the perfect choice for me!
