I was about to complete my Bachelor’s degree in IT from Viva College in Mumbai when the college postponed final exams for eight months, due to the Covid-19 outbreak. With only a bachelor of science degree in IT, I knew not to expect much in getting my first job. I wanted a course that could increase my job readiness.

I’m a native of Kerala, India. After obtaining a BTech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, I began working as a junior engineer. However, I eventually reached a point of stagnation. I found myself in a position where there was not much to explore and learning was limited. I wanted to enroll in a certification program and make a career transition, but I needed courses that would complement my full-time work schedule.

After six years of training at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, I obtained my pharmacist license. I began working as a Pharmacy House Officer at Maamobi General Hospital in Accra, Ghana. I managed the ART and diabetic clinics of the hospital. At the ART clinic, I was responsible for refills, counseling clients, and initiating new clients on therapy. I also checked for drug interactions, as most of the patients had other conditions such as hypertension, in addition to diabetes. This set me on the path to practice public health, primarily in HIV care and clinical pharmacy.

I developed an interest in health projects and programs, and decided to upskill. I saw the possibilities of big data in the pharmacy industry, and wanted to understand the latest technologies better. I plunged ahead and enrolled in Simplilearn’s PRINCE2® Practitioner and Foundation, Introduction to Data Analytics, and Digital Transformation Leader courses.

What I Gained From My Upskilling Efforts

These courses taught me how to calculate risks and when to act on them. The data analytics skills I acquired included gathering data, interpreting it, making inferences, and implementing solutions. The skills I learned from Prince2® and Introduction to Data Analytics will be useful in research pursuits as well.

My new skills helped me in my everyday work at the hospital. The certification helped me implement strategies to get my clients to adhere to therapy. I saw each client as a project and tackled each one individually. I had a plan to personally call them to remind them of clinic dates and check up on them. It also helped me to rate the performance and progress of therapy using key performance indicators.

I saw the need for Agile management skills first-hand while working as an IT project manager at TCS. I worked in systems integration and estimated project timelines and costs. Projects kept getting delayed, and we did not have a mechanism to speed things up. That was when I decided to pursue the ASM® certification.

I knew about the Agile methodology, but only theoretically. I lacked practical experience. I began researching project management courses. I had positive experiences taking courses from Simplilearn in the past: Prince2® Foundation and Practitioner Certification Training and ITIL® Intermediate ST Certification Training. Simplilearn provides an option to compare classes, and I looked at ASM and Certified ScrumMaster (CSM®). I compared the benefits and differences and decided on Agile Scrum Master (ASM).

My Learning Journey With Simplilearn

The course was excellent. The instructors understood what students needed to learn, anticipated what questions they might ask, and shared real-life examples. There were plenty of references provided for further study.

To pursue my full-time job and take courses through Simplilearn, I practiced time management. I divided the course into various modules and finished one module per week. At the end of each week, I took online mock tests to test my skills.

When I completed the course, I scheduled a practice exam with Simplilearn so that I could take the actual ASM exam with confidence. Mock tests on Simplilearn’s website helped me evaluate my preparation and track my progress. This feature was a game-changer.

When I realized that I needed a career change, I took action by taking courses in Simplilearn’s Quality Management Training to build my talents and marketability.

I received a Bachelor’s of Applied Science from Digvijay College, Rajnandgaon, and completed my Master’s in Retail Management at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. I started my career in business process outsourcing (BPO) at Infosys. But I soon discovered that I wasn’t satisfied with the workload and irregular shifts, and decided to switch to an information technology (IT) role.

I started my career in nontechnical roles, but like every industry, there were pros and cons, and I preferred more technically evolving roles. So I decided to polish my skills and choose a more satisfying career path. To do that, I had to upskill. I began shopping for training courses to gain ITIL® and PMP® certifications.

Working at a startup isn’t easy. We have to set up so many processes, understand the drawbacks of each, and come up with solutions. Having earned my MBA in 2009 in finance and marketing, I had a cursory knowledge of quality management methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma. A few years after starting my career at Ezetap Mobile Solutions Pvt. Ltd, I realized that by harnessing the power of a proven business process methodology, I could greatly improve my own output.
