I’ve worked in technology since the start of my career. From the very beginning, I have sought out ways to learn and be more valuable to my employers. In pursuit of this goal, I’ve earned certifications in computer hardware maintenance and operation while working with several companies on deskside support and networking. I have completed  CCNA, MCSE, RHCSA, RHCE, and Lean Sigma certifications. Most recently, I completed the ITIL Lifecycle Expert program with Simplilearn.

Previously, I worked as a technical support engineer, managing a team of 16 people. My responsibilities included providing day-to-day support for software, troubleshooting problems pertaining to system performance, network administration, and developing and implementing new repair techniques. I decided to pursue the ITIL Expert program because working in IT services means I need to always stay current, as well as learn new skills to get ahead.

I first heard about Simplilearn from a friend. When I looked into it, I learned Simplilearn is one of the world’s largest training providers, offering excellent customer service and a high-quality course curriculum that covered all aspects of the training I wanted. Their online self-learning path worked well for me. I completed the course in six months, studying for three hours during the weekends and 30 minutes to an hour during the weekdays.

Simplilearn is a place where you can take up your training at your own pace and away from the hustle and bustle of your day job. You can simply access the course curriculum and continue with your learning when you have spare time.

The course was well-structured and easy to understand. As a non-native English speaker, I appreciated the neutral accent of the instructor, because it made it easier for me to comprehend the material. The instructor was great and always delivered training in the easiest possible way with plenty of examples and diagrams, plus pointers which eventually contributed to my success. I was able to apply the concepts I learned in my day-to-day work and internal job interviews.

I also liked that the training videos could be downloaded for future viewing. This meant I could always revisit a topic when I thought I needed a better understanding of certain concepts. I also appreciated the customer support. Simplilearn customer service is very agile and quick to respond to any of your queries. They set an example for others.

Service operations has helped me improve my analysis skills and taught me about the importance of having a right balance between a proactive and a reactive approach to a situation. In addition, the course gave me an understanding of KPI metrics. I also learned project management techniques that have helped me as a manager leading a team. I already had an overview of the ITIL framework prior to the program, but the training helped me gain in-depth knowledge. I learned how to do a deep dive analysis and play around with the data. There are so many things available in ITIL and sometimes, without proper training, we would never be able to use all the tools and resources available.

I know there are countless success stories about professionals who started out in the mailroom and worked their way up to the executive suite, but these have become increasingly rare. Today, even the brightest, most driven professionals must acquire certain formal skills in order to meet their goals. I always believed I had great insights and ambitions larger than just my job description, but I often felt like my ideas fell on deaf ears.

I realized I needed to learn some new hard skills to leverage my innate abilities and drive in order to grow into my full potential. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time or flexibility to attend in-person classes while also working full-time and taking care of my children.

After a couple of unsatisfying roles, I was hired as a product owner in ThermoFisher Scientific’s Carlsbad, CA office. That’s where I was exposed to the agile process, which led me to Simplilearn’s Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP®) training program. After becoming certified, I felt I was much better equipped to communicate my ideas and work seamlessly with my colleagues.

Overall it was a really good experience. After taking my PMI certification course, and subsequent certification, I saw a lot of differences in my career.

I began my career working as a call center agent at a young age, pursuing my undergraduate degree in computer science. Empowered by my new degree and ready to take on more responsibility, I took a job as a business analyst with a telecommunications company. My position consisted of generating estimates based on analysis reports, but what I really wanted to do was create a product, enhance customer experience, and develop tangible solutions.

I’ve always been an innovator and an “ideas guy” at heart, but the rank and file reality of the job didn’t match my ambitions or abilities. The boundaries and limitations put in place at my place of employment left my ideas routinely ignored. That’s when I landed at another telecommunications company but in a different role, managing teams and contributing to the development of the products. Finally, I was hired as a product owner with ThermoFisher, where the team had been adapting agile methods and other forward-thinking ideas. Here, I attended work-related meetups focused on agile technologies for the purpose of increasing team productivity and enhancing customer satisfaction. From these meetings, I decided I wanted to learn practical techniques for planning and estimating the cost of the project using agile methods. That’s when one of my friends suggested that I pursue a project management certification through Simplilearn.

The thirst for knowledge is endless and for as long as I can remember I have loved learning. My friends have given me the nickname of a ‘serial learner’ because of my love for learning. I love picking up new skills or even going back to school to expand my knowledge.

I have worked with India’s top IT and software firms have garnered a decent amount of experience on topics as cloud security, DevOps, cryptography, and IT infrastructure.

I am currently working as a CIO for StopSpoof, a company that provides security against phishing emails, and I also serve on the Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) board of directors. I’ve also held positions with three Indian state governments, work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (US), and even worked with the international consulting firm KPMG.

While I’m meeting my professional goals, there is still so much that I don’t know and have yet to learn. It is the key to staying relevant in the ever-changing world of technology, and the ongoing arms race of IT and computer security in particular. I did my undergrad degree in physics from the University of Mumbai, then pursued a degree in business management and IT from the Indian Institute of Business Management and Studies, I then completed my MBA in information technology. With my thirst for knowledge growing, I turned to getting post-graduate certifications and training sessions, spanning a wide range of technologies and project management methodologies.

My next goal was in the field of cybersecurity, where I was looking for a comprehensive program to help me not only get started but also provides a 360-degree view of security to understand the motivations and methods of hackers better and learn the best practices for protecting IT and computer assets.

My thought process for this was, if I am in cybersecurity, should I be more in the offensive red team, or should I be in the blue team which is defensive? If I know both, I am a grandmaster. This cemented my goal to becoming a grandmaster.

These courses helped me to understand why a certain model is reactive and why something else is preventive. My job requires me to stay updated with the latest technology, and with these courses, it eases decision-making and clarifies why we are choosing a particular option over another.

After taking four years off to care for my young child, I decided to re-enter the job market. However, I had three obstacles: I lacked an IT background, needed to upskill myself, and needed to find a course that provided flexibility.
