In the tech world, you can’t afford to be left behind. You have to consistently keep upgrading to ensure that you and your company comply with the latest technologies on the market. This is why I knew that I will definitely have to keep upskilling to ensure that I stay relevant in my field.

When my company, Visa’s software engineering team in Bangalore decided to adopt the DevOps framework, I realized it was time to start looking at polishing my skills. I came across Simplilearn’s DevOps Engineer Master’s Program and to be very honest, after completing this comprehensive course I was able to improve my own effectiveness, but also help upgrade my entire team.

Like any good investment, career training usually pays off. For my contribution to my company’s growth, I got a raise shortly after completing the DevOps coursework. Let’s take a look at my journey of how I got into DevOps.

The Challenge: Combining the Dev With the Ops

After earning my computer science and engineering (CSE) degree from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai, I started receiving job offers from several prominent employers including my dream company, Visa. I have worked here for the past four years. But as I said, in the IT field, you either upskill or get left behind. So, I knew I would keep having to upskill and stay up to date with any new technologies that come my way.

In my day-to-day work, I had one foot in software development and the other in operations, in addition to security-related work. More specifically, I was the single point of contact for production requests or changes. So, while this is the type of position best suited for the DevOps approach, neither I nor any of my team members had formal training in this methodology. Since my team was moving in that direction, I decided it was time to add DevOps to my skill-set.

When I realized the benefits of DevOps for my organization and career,  I knew I needed to get the right education.

To adapt to dynamic career challenges, people are starting to equip themselves with new and upcoming skills. If you wish to stay relevant and up-to-date with the needs of the digital world, constantly learning new skills is the solution. This is my story of how I transitioned from an Industrial engineer to an Analytics Manager.

The Challenge

I worked as an Industrial Engineer for two years at First American India Pvt. Ltd. Since I was always fascinated with data, I changed my domain and got the role of Assistant Manager for Data Analysis and started working in MISD (Multiple Instruction, Single Data).

During my role, I worked primarily with Excel for all data-related work. I was able to work with graphs and pictorial representations, but there was not much else I could do on Excel. One time, the management asked me to show them the top performers or the bottom liners, and with Excel’s limitations, I couldn’t do it. With the amount of data coming in, I felt that there has to be a better way to express data.

When I saw my colleagues in different departments working with different tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Data Studio, and R Studio, I realized that they were getting work done more in-depth. Most importantly, this opened my eyes to a whole new field of data analytics.

Since no one knew how to use Tableau in my division, I decided to learn and introduce it to my team to learn better from data.

I started training myself through online videos and attending live classes. However, they were not as professional and interactive as I had hoped for. The demos were not well organized and the instructors were not trained enough. They lacked interactive and communication skills mostly due to the fact that they were part-timers who were professionals in their own organization. They only focused on basic courses, and not everyone was able to follow their pace. I knew I needed trainers and professionals who had an in-depth knowledge of Tableau.

The Simplilearn Solution

When I googled Tableau courses, Simplilearn was the first result that came up. With anticipation, I looked through a lot of other sites as well and compared all the curriculums. Simplilearn’s curriculum looked far more advanced and structured than all the rest.

I started my course with Simplilearn in October 2018 when I signed up for the course and received a call from one of Simpilearn’s sales executives. The sales executive was easily able to put all my doubts to rest about the course curriculum, the instructors, the amount of interaction I would get with instructors and so on. Even before the course started, I felt that they had good knowledge about how the course would be.

With my past experience, I was very skeptical about the way the instructor would train. However, the batch was a mix of beginners, moderates, and experienced people and the trainer was easily able to handle all the three types of learners. The course was well structured and the quality of training was very good. Some of the highlights from the course were maps, heatmaps, country and state, pictorial representation of maps, tooltip and parameter control.

The one thing that I liked the most about Simplilearn’s training process was the surveys taken after every two days. When the trainer was too fast or too slow for some learners, they were able to raise their concerns and the feedback would be incorporated by the trainer.

This made the training highly interactive as I was easily able to communicate with not just the trainer but with the other learners from all over the world as well.

I hit a roadblock with Simplilearn’s final project for certification. I got in touch with my trainer to get some hep and he was there for the entire duration of my project. I was able to finish the project exceptionally well and got my certification.

As documented by, Dhanya Sasidharan.

I received an Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree in 2004 and a master’s in Power Electronics in 2006 before starting my career as a software engineer at Wabco-TVS (now Wabco India.) I then joined Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions in 2013 as a project manager. My employer knew I had the skills and mindset for a more senior role, and promoted me to a PMO Lead position not long after I started. This was a period of significant professional growth for me.

My new job responsibilities included mentoring and coaching project managers, as well as developing an in-house reporting tool to display the status of each project. While working on this, I realized that there were delays in pulling out the results. I needed access to better tools in order to be more efficient and effective in my new role.

I knew I could do a much better job predicting results and analyzing where (and how) project bottlenecks were occurring only with the help of in-depth analysis. I concluded that formal training in data science would allow me to bridge the gap and help my team become more efficient and productive.

I was looking for a flexible and cost-effective training program; after all, I still had full-time management duties during the day and would need to convince my managers that it was a smart investment. Fortunately, my employer understood the importance of investing in employee training both as a way of improving performance and retaining top performers.

I learned about Simplilearn through colleagues and friends and was impressed with their feedback. Since Simplilearn was already one of the online training providers associated with Bosch, my company was able to negotiate a good rate for me and four of my colleagues to enroll in their Data Science Course.

I took the training on weekends and in my free time during the weekdays. The flexibility of the course allowed me to maintain my busy work schedule while I learned analytics and data science hands-on. I also appreciated the blend of live, instructor-led classes and self-guided video lessons. When I had technical questions, Simplilearn’s support team helped me in a timely manner.

I have a Master’s degree from Rutgers University in machine learning and another from Northwestern University in cognitive science. I’ve worked for Schwab, Delta, and Blue Shield of California, introducing metrics, measurements and process changes for increased productivity. But my career needed a boost and I wanted a leadership role.

I was working in quality, but without a certification. Simplilearn helped move my career forward when I pursued Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training to prepare for the IASSC certification exam. When researching how to prepare for my certification exam, I chose Simplilearn in part because it is affiliated with the Project Management Institute (PMI) as a registered partner. This meant their training was in alignment with PMI concepts, so it would be aligned with my other certifications.

I also liked the format offered by Simplilearn, which offers interactive webinar courses and maximum flexibility for balancing work and life. It was easy to choose the times and durations that would fit with my work and home commitments. In addition, the format was interactive which made it more effective. Being able to engage with instructors during the sessions made it feel like a classroom environment, but in my home office!

Once I started on the coursework, I discovered the high quality of the content, as well. The level of the instructors was top-notch and their passion for their field came through. In addition, the lessons learned were immediately applicable to my job. The course was filled with real world examples, and students were encouraged to share their experiences. The instructor worked us through potential solutions that we could take back and immediately put into practice.

It wasn’t just about listening to the material being presented. The value really came from the instructor’s wealth of experience and presenting real-life examples of the concepts they taught. It’s one thing to learn how to create metrics. It’s another to hear a story of a problem, the metrics and measurements created to solve the problem, and the results—which could be failure or success.

I also appreciated being able to download links so I could go back and listen again to certain material, and use those downloaded links as reference.

After earning my certification, I became a Senior Project and Quality Program Manager at Blue Shield, providing oversight with a focus on streamlining efforts and increasing performance. I build and implement quality standards and metrics for the Project Management Life Cycle (PMLC), streamline processes for moving projects through the PMLC faster, and establish the “Customer’s Voice” to create a continuous improvement cycle with other project managers. I also combine quality metrics with User Acceptance Testing practices, serve as lean process expert to improve the product pipeline, and have built a high performance onshore/offshore team to procure and install new cloud technology.

Virtually everyone’s lives were upended as the result of the global COVID-19 crisis, including mine. Diminished economic activity in the wake of social distancing guidelines enacted to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus prompted a wave of layoffs in early 2020. Based in Louisville, Kentucky as a veteran technology professional, I was laid off from my job as a manager in April after eight and a half years, and decided I needed to take control of my post-COVID future by upgrading my skills.

As a 30-year veteran in the world of information technology, I was no stranger to upskilling, which is why I have been able to thrive in the industry for so long. I started my career as a programmer, worked as a developer, eventually moving into hardware support and database support. After the 2020 layoff, I took a pragmatic look at IT trends and realized that cloud computing was a growth industry with incredible career opportunities.

I believe that companies today are looking toward cloud technology to shore up their business value at the end of the day. This is my rationale for choosing cloud computing as my next professional focus. Six months after receiving the pink slip, I am now a gainfully employed systems engineering manager for a health care payments platform company, thanks in no small part to Simplilearn’s Cloud Architect Master’s Program.

My story is proof positive that with the right motivation and training, professionals can recover and indeed thrive after experiencing a temporary setback due to events beyond their control. Learn how I leveraged Simplilearn’s unique online learning platform to reinvent my career.

The Challenge: Getting Back on Track After a Layoff

I describe myself as a positive person, an admirable trait during such trying times. So, soon after I was laid off as part of a broader reduction in force at the health care services company where I handled change and problem management, I directed my attention toward solving my own change in career status. I was already intrigued with the seemingly endless potential of cloud computing and saw that advanced cloud skills were in high demand

I wanted to immerse myself in all aspects of cloud technology and gain hands-on experience with the three major cloud computing platforms: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). I was particularly intrigued with the expanding use of cloud technology for virtual machines, application servers, application services, web services, and so much more.

While I was able to find classes on AWS or Azure, what I really wanted was a program that would provide a comprehensive and rigorous education in cloud computing that involved all three major cloud platforms. I searched online for programs that were comprehensive, effective, affordable, and flexible, and Simplilearn’s offerings consistently showed up at the top of the list. As I refined my search, I decided that Simplilearn had more to offer and its process looked intuitive to me.

My mind made up, I enrolled in Simplilearn’s seven-course Cloud Architect Master’s Program, covering the latest tools and methods across all three major cloud platforms.

Like many of us, I pursued a formal education while young, earning my bachelor’s and master’s degrees—but that education didn’t stay current. Just like a doctor must learn new medical theories and procedures, an IT specialist must master new software, as a marketing professional, I realized that I must learn new skills and tactics to stay relevant, and keep on learning throughout my career to remain successful.

I earned my MBA from the University of Leicester, with a focus on Marketing and General Management, but that was back in 2010. the knowledge I gained then was no longer enough. In fact, with the increased importance of digital marketing, almost everything that I learned in 2010 was now obsolete. I decided not to get left behind in my career and give my career a huge boost, so I choose to earn a Digital Marketing Specialist Master’s certification from Simplilearn.

Knowing When It’s Time to Upskill

Having realized that I wasn’t in a position to properly create and execute digital marketing strategies, I began searching for a way to acquire skills that didn’t even exist when I was earning my degrees. Marketing had changed dramatically since I completed my MBA program, and I knew I needed a new skill set to keep my career moving forward. This led me to research options for online learning. I wanted practical learning, not theoretical, and it seemed Simplilearn offered the types of skills and expertise I was looking for.

Simplilearn offers both virtual and online learning which was perfect for my learning style. I chose to do the online courses because I have the self-discipline to do so and because I’m the type of student who likes self-paced learning. I don’t like to be in a classroom or a structured setting. With the self-paced option, I was able to do the courses on my own time. For me, the only downside was not being able to ask a question of the instructor in real-time.

Simplilearn’s certification program fit both my desire to learn and the kind of high-quality and relevant education I was seeking. Not only were the instructors really good, they made it easy for me to learn. More importantly, the curriculum wasn’t just theory: I received hands-on practice and could apply what I was learning immediately. I also appreciated the prompt customer service. Every time I needed assistance, I sent an email and got feedback right away.

The instructors’ cutting-edge industry experience made it possible for me to learn best practices that are current for today’s marketing professionals. And even though we learned about the latest in digital marketing, the program offered a broad education. It wasn’t all about social media marketing, PPC, or other trendy marketing topics. We covered everything that has to do with digital marketing. So once I graduated, I felt confident that I knew every single aspect of what it entails.
